Dollar Index dips on Iran compromise headlines as weak US housing data shapes Fed rate outlook

The Dollar Index slid after reports said Washington and Tehran had preliminary approval for a compromise brokered by Qatar and Pakistan, touching its lowest since October 1. It eased from near 101.75 to about 101.65 and then to just above 101.50 after Israel’s Channel 12 outlined terms, before rebounding towards 101.70 when a diplomat involved said claims a deal is close are wrong. Oil fell on the headlines, lifting the Euro, which carries more than half the index’s weight, and the move fed into rate expectations after Treasury Secretary Bessent linked higher US rates to an energy shock.

US housing data came in weak: starts fell to 1.221 million in September versus a 1.3 million forecast, while pending home sales dropped 7.3% to a record low against an expected 0.5% fall. The index rose on both release bars. Fed officials are in a quiet period before the October 27-28 FOMC meeting, with a poll of 100 economists showing 94 expecting rates to hold at 3.75%-4.00% in October and all 100 pencilling in a December hike, though 6 see an October move. Technically, the index has retraced about a third of the rise from 98.60 on September 9 to just under 103.00 on October 14, with the 50-day EMA just under 101.00.

Headline Volatility and Short-Term Trading Strategies

We are watching the US Dollar Index closely as headline volatility spikes around headline news in the Middle East. With the index bouncing between 101.50 and 101.70, we should expect short-term chop rather than a clear trend until diplomatic reports are confirmed. Traders should consider using tight stop-loss orders on short-term Dollar positions or using options strategies to manage sudden price swings.

We must also prepare for incoming US economic data, particularly as the housing sector shows severe cracks. Pending home sales recently cratered by 7.3%, which historically signals cooling economic momentum and weakens the case for aggressive monetary tightening. With Thursday’s jobless claims and Friday’s flash PMI readings on deck, we should position for potential downside risk in US yields if these prints confirm economic softening.

Fed Policy Expectations and Technical Outlook

Since the Federal Reserve is currently in its quiet period ahead of the October 27-28 decision, market expectations will be driven purely by data releases and geopolitical updates. The consensus shows 94 out of 100 polled economists expect a interest rate hold at 3.75%-4.00% this month, while pricing in a potential hike for December. We should remain cautious about taking massive directional bets before the official rate statement on October 28.

From a technical perspective, the dollar index has given back about a third of its rally from the September low of 98.60 to its mid-October peak near 103.00. We are eyeing key support near the 50-day exponential moving average around 101.00. If price action breaks below this level, we should look for potential short opportunities in major currency pairs like the Euro, which makes up over 57% of the dollar index weighting.
