Gold recovers above $4,100 as Treasury yields slip after hawkish Fed minutes

Gold (XAU/USD) stayed under pressure on Wednesday but climbed back above $4,100 as US Treasury yields gave up earlier gains and turned negative. The latest Federal Open Market Committee minutes showed unanimous support for September’s rate increase, while also pointing to disagreement over whether future moves should be precautionary or the start of a tighter policy path. At the time of writing, gold was at $4,115, down 1.16%, after sliding to a two-month low of $4,066.

Money markets currently imply a 19% chance of a hike at this month’s meeting, compared with an 80% probability of a hold, according to Prime Terminal. In rates, the US 10-year yield fell one basis point to 5.27% after touching a 24-year high of 5.365%, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose 0.40% to 102.24. Oil also weakened, with WTI down 1.66% at $88.45. Technically, support sits near $4,100; resistance includes $4,200 and the 100- and 50-day SMAs at $4,267 and $4,331, with downside levels at $3,996 and the YTD low of $3,941.

Key Technical Levels And Trading Strategies

We suggest derivative traders watch the $4,100 level closely as a pivotal point for short-term positions in the coming weeks. If gold prices break cleanly below this support, we could see quick downside moves toward the key summer lows near $3,996. For those trading short-term contracts, purchasing put options or entering short positions on brief rallies toward $4,200 offers a strong risk-to-reward ratio.

This cautious stance is backed by the current macroeconomic environment where the US 10-year Treasury yield remains highly restrictive at 5.27%. Historically, when bond yields hover near multi-decade highs, non-yielding assets like gold face heavy liquidation pressure from institutional portfolios. We believe that as long as the Federal Reserve keeps another rate hike on the table for later this year, any major upside momentum for the precious metal will remain capped.

Macro Environment And Range-Bound Opportunities

However, we must not ignore the strong floor being created by global central banks, led by China’s continuous purchases for nearly two years. Recent World Gold Council data highlights that central bank buying has consistently removed hundreds of tonnes of supply from the market, which historically limits deep market sell-offs. Derivative traders can use this long-term demand to set up range-bound strategies, such as selling out-of-the-money puts targeting a rebound if prices dip toward the $3,940 range.

The recent drop in oil prices toward $88 a barrel is also helping ease immediate inflation expectations, which may soon take some pressure off US Treasury yields. We advise traders to keep a close eye on upcoming economic indicators like Initial Jobless Claims and consumer confidence data to gauge the Fed’s next move. Utilizing flexible contract sizes through generic trading accounts will allow traders to quickly adapt to the volatile swings expected around these key data releases.
