WTI Hovers Near Four-Week Low as Geopolitical Premium Meets Waning Momentum Below Key Averages

WTI Technical Picture: Support, Resistance, and Consolidation Risks

WTI edged higher in Asian trade on Tuesday to reclaim $89.00 after a two-day losing run, yet it stayed near a four-week low set last Friday. Price action continued to carry a geopolitical risk premium tied to the chance of wider Middle East tensions, while resilient regional crude exports and a G7 emergency stockpile release reduced near-term supply stress.

On the charts, WTI appeared to be accepted below the 200-period simple moving average on the four-hour timeframe, with a further break beneath the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the July–September rise needed to firm up a bearish case. The MACD remained slightly negative, and the RSI sat around 46, pointing to consolidation rather than a clear rebound. Resistance was flagged at the 200-period SMA near $90.60 and then the 23.6% retracement at $93.62, while support levels were cited at $88.52, about $84.40, and $80.29; the cycle high reference stood at $101.85.

Derivative Trading Caution and Fundamental Market Drivers

We suggest that derivative traders exercise caution in the coming weeks as West Texas Intermediate (WTI) struggles to maintain momentum near the $89.00 level. Although geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to inject a risk premium into the market, easing supply concerns are capping the upside. We believe this creates a highly consolidative environment where breakout strategies might face false starts.

To put this in perspective, recent energy data shows that global oil demand growth has slowed to under 1 million barrels per day, largely weighed down by weaker industrial activity in major Asian economies. Additionally, record-high non-OPEC+ production, led by the US producing over 13.5 million barrels per day, has cushioned the market against unexpected disruptions. This supply buffer explains why the market is hesitant to push prices significantly higher despite ongoing regional conflicts.

Strategic Trade Setups: Technical Triggers and Risk Management

From a technical standpoint, we advise traders to closely monitor the 4-hour chart, where WTI is currently trading below its 200-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) of $90.60. For those looking to establish short positions, we recommend waiting for a decisive close below the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level at $88.52. If this support breaks, we could see a rapid slide toward the 50% retracement level near $84.40, presenting a solid short-term trading opportunity.

Conversely, if buyers manage to push the price back above the $90.60 threshold, we should prepare for a potential run toward the $93.62 resistance level. However, given that momentum indicators like the RSI are hovering around a neutral 46, a sustained rally back to the cycle highs above $101.00 seems highly unlikely right now. We recommend using tight stop-loss orders on your preferred trading platform to manage risk in this range-bound environment.
