Australia’s CPI rose 4.0% year on year in August, accelerating from 3.5% in July, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The outcome matched the 4.0% market forecast. On a monthly basis, CPI increased 0.4% after a 1.0% rise previously, also in line with consensus. The trimmed mean CPI, a core gauge, rose 0.2% month on month and was up 3.6% year on year.

Australian Dollar Reaction

In foreign exchange, the Australian dollar weakened after the release, with AUD/USD down 0.25% on the day at 0.6970.

Inflation Concepts And Monetary Policy Implications

The data sit alongside standard inflation concepts used in monetary policy analysis, where headline measures track changes in a representative basket and core approaches exclude volatile items such as food and fuel; central banks often aim for inflation around 2%, and deviations can influence interest-rate settings and, in turn, currency and gold pricing dynamics.
