Gold rebounds from eight-week low as oil-led inflation bolsters Fed tightening expectations

Gold (XAU/USD) rebounded in early Asian trade on Wednesday from an eight-week low to about $4,180, but gains were constrained as oil-led inflation kept expectations tilted towards tighter US Federal Reserve policy. Market attention remained on the path for US rates, with a firmer US Dollar, elevated Treasury yields and rising energy prices lending support to the case for further tightening. The US 30-year yield moved above 5.61%, its highest since 2002, while the two-year yield fell by as much as five basis points before settling near 4.88%. Gold’s inflation-hedge appeal was weighed against the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset when rates are high.

Traders awaited the US August PCE price index on Wednesday and the NFP report due Friday, as softer labour data could pressure the dollar and provide near-term support for dollar-priced commodities. On the chart, XAU/USD stayed below the 100-day SMA and the Bollinger Bands’ midpoint, with the RSI at 40.11 still bearish but off oversold levels. Resistance was seen at the 100-day SMA near $4,295, then $4,325, with the upper band at $4,490, while support sat around $4,165; a break could deepen the corrective move after the bounce from sub-$4,100.

Trading Recommendations and Risk Management

We recommend that derivative traders tread carefully with long positions despite gold’s recent rebound to $4,180. While the metal is bouncing back from an eight-week low, the broader technical setup remains bearish as the price stays below the 100-day simple moving average of $4,295. To manage risk, we should look to establish short-term put options or set tight stop-losses just above the immediate support level of $4,165.

Monetary Policy Impact and Strategy Suggestions

We must closely monitor the energy sector, where rising oil prices are keeping inflation high and driving expectations of tighter monetary policy. This environment has pushed the US 30-Year Treasury Yield to 5.61%, a high level of borrowing costs that mimics macroeconomic pressures last seen in 2002. Consequently, we should prepare for the US Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer, which increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold and caps its upward momentum.

In the coming weeks, we suggest using straddle or strangle option strategies to capitalize on the guaranteed volatility surrounding the upcoming US PCE inflation and payroll data. A weaker-than-expected labor market report could quickly pressure the US Dollar and push gold back toward the Bollinger midpoint of $4,325. Conversely, if inflation indicators remain hot, we should expect a sharp breakdown below $4,165, which will open the door for highly profitable short positions.
