US consumer confidence slides as dollar hits multi-week highs amid rising yields and geopolitical tensions

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index eased to 81.9 in September from 88.6 in August, with the prior month revised from 89.4. The Present Situation Index fell by 7.9 points to 109.3, while the Expectations Index slipped 5.9 points to 63.6, marking a third straight monthly decline. The preliminary survey covered 1-23 September, a window that included a federal funds rate rise alongside ongoing geopolitical tensions.

In markets, the US Dollar (USD) advanced and reached fresh multi-week highs in the 101.40-101.50 area, as Middle East uncertainty and higher US Treasury yields supported demand. The USD remains the world’s most traded currency, accounting for over 88% of global foreign exchange turnover, or about $6.6 trillion a day based on 2022 data. The Federal Reserve targets price stability and full employment, using interest rates and tools such as quantitative easing (QE) and quantitative tightening (QT), with the 2% inflation target guiding policy settings.

Currency and Derivatives Strategies Amid Rising Dollar and Weak Confidence

We believe the sudden drop in US consumer confidence to 81.9, combined with a rising US Dollar Index hovering near 101.45, presents a strong opening for currency derivative traders in the coming weeks. Given the persistent geopolitical tensions and the recent interest rate hike, we should look to buy short-term call options on the USD against weaker major currencies. This strategy capitalizes on the greenback’s role as a reliable safe haven while the global market processes these weaker domestic economic indicators.

With the Expectations Index falling for the third straight month to a worrying 63.6, equity markets are facing a quiet storm. Historically, when this specific sub-index dips below the critical 80 threshold, it has frequently preceded broader economic recessions, as seen during the market downturns of 2001 and 2008. To protect our portfolios from sudden downside risks, we suggest buying protective put options on the S&P 500 or targeting volatility index (VIX) call options.

Opportunities in Bonds and Safe Haven Assets as Economic Uncertainty Rises

Rising Treasury yields are currently propping up the dollar, but the weakening consumer sentiment suggests this trend might soon face resistance. If consumer spending slows down as these confidence numbers imply, the Federal Reserve may eventually have to pause or reverse its aggressive stance. We can position ourselves for this shift by looking at long call options on Treasury bond ETFs, anticipating a potential drop in yields if economic growth begins to stall.

Geopolitical uncertainty, paired with this sharp drop in domestic consumer optimism, makes gold a vital asset to watch. Gold has historically shown a strong negative correlation with consumer confidence, often rallying when consumer sentiment falters. We should consider utilizing long call options on gold futures to capture any sudden upward moves as investors seek shelter from equity market volatility.
