Rupee hits two-month low as firmer crude and Fed hike bets lift USD/INR near 96.13

The Indian rupee sank to a two-month low against the US dollar on Tuesday, pushing USD/INR towards 96.13 as concerns over prolonged energy supply disruption weighed on sentiment. Oil prices firmed after US President Donald Trump pushed back expectations of near-term diplomacy with Iran, lifting the MCX Crude Oil contract expiring on 19 October by 1.55% to about Rs 9,050. Currencies of oil-importing economies typically weaken when crude rises.

Oil had earlier eased after an Axios report said Washington had agreed to roll back sanctions on Iran and release frozen funds in exchange for steps on Tehran’s nuclear programme, but Trump denied offering any relief. Separately, Iran’s foreign minister said proposals covering the Strait of Hormuz and a wider peace process were being discussed via Qatari mediators. Reuters reported the Reserve Bank of India may step up support to prevent a sustained move beyond 96 per dollar, citing increased firepower from foreign exchange reserve accumulation via FCNR deposits. Markets also weighed expectations for further Federal Reserve tightening, with CME FedWatch showing an almost 70% probability of an October rate rise; attention turns to August JOLTS at 14:00 GMT, seen at 7.23 million versus 7.271 million in July. Technically, USD/INR traded around 96.10, above the 20-day EMA at 95.68, with RSI at 62.5 and resistance near 97.00.

Trading Strategies for USD/INR and Crude Oil

Given that the USD/INR has breached the 96.00 mark and is targeting 97.00, we advise derivative traders to favor long positions using call options or bull call spreads. The technical outlook remains highly supportive as the pair holds comfortably above its 20-day exponential moving average of 95.68. With the Relative Strength Index at 62.5, there is still plenty of room for upward movement before the market becomes overbought.

We should also target the commodity space, particularly MCX crude oil contracts, which have rallied past Rs. 9,050. Because India relies on imports for over 85% of its crude oil needs, domestic energy prices are highly sensitive to global supply disruptions. Buying short-term call options on crude futures will allow us to capitalize on this upward momentum driven by geopolitical friction.

Risk Management and Volatility Outlook

However, we must manage the risk of heavy intervention by the Reserve Bank of India, which has historically stepped in to defend psychological currency boundaries. India’s foreign exchange reserves remain incredibly robust at over $680 billion, giving the central bank massive firepower to cap rupee losses. To mitigate the risk of sudden dollar-selling by the central bank, we recommend placing strict stop-loss orders just below 95.68.

Finally, with an almost 70% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike in the near term, we expect heightened volatility ahead of upcoming US labor data. Traders can exploit this uncertainty by deploying neutral-direction options strategies, like long straddles, on the USD/INR. This approach will help us profit from sharp price swings in either direction as macroeconomic data unfolds in the coming weeks.
