USD/JPY Holds Near 157.50 as Firm Yen and Fed Hike Bets Keep Pair Range-Bound

USD/JPY was little changed on Tuesday in thin Silver Week trading, with the yen holding firm while a broadly stronger US dollar limited gains. The pair was around 157.46, as the US Dollar Index (DXY) traded near 100.60, close to levels last seen in late July, supported by expectations of further Federal Reserve rate rises. Markets also tracked Middle East developments after comments by US President Donald Trump at the UN provided little indication of de-escalation.

After the Bank of Japan’s policy update on Friday, USD/JPY rose to 158.05 before slipping back towards 157.00, after reports that the BoJ conducted a rate check during the New York session. The earlier monthly drop saw the pair fall from near 160 to 153, and the rebound has stalled below key moving averages, even as the Relative Strength Index sat around 52 and MACD turned positive. Resistance is flagged at the 200-day SMA of 158.44, then the 50-day SMA at 158.86 and the 100-day SMA at 159.53, with 160 as the next barrier and 164 near the 40-year high from late July beyond it; support sits near 155.50 and then 153.

Trading Strategies for a Range-Bound Environment

We suggest that derivative traders prepare for tight, range-bound trading in USD/JPY over the coming weeks as the pair hovers near 157.46. With the US Dollar Index remaining resilient around 100.60, upward pressure persists, but heavy technical resistance lies just ahead. To capitalize on this consolidation, we recommend utilizing short-term iron condors or range-bound option spreads that profit from low volatility.

Risk Management and Technical Levels

We must respect the Bank of Japan’s recent rate checks, which historically serve as the final warning before direct market intervention. During previous currency defenses, Japan spent a record 9.8 trillion yen (around $62 billion) in late spring of 2024 to pull the Yen back from multi-decade lows. Consequently, we advise buying out-of-the-money USD/JPY put options to hedge against a sudden, violent drop if the pair approaches the critical 160.00 threshold.

Our technical analysis shows that while momentum indicators like the RSI at 52 are turning slightly positive, the 200-day SMA at 158.44 remains a formidable barrier. We suggest avoiding long breakout strategies until we see a daily close sustained above the 100-day SMA at 159.53. Instead, trading the implied volatility skew, which currently favors yen-call options due to intervention fears, offers a much smarter risk-reward profile.
