Rupee pares early gains as UN energy talks steer oil risks and USD/INR volatility

The Indian Rupee opened firmer against the US Dollar on Tuesday before paring gains, leaving USD/INR little changed at about 95.82 ahead of talks between US and Gulf leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The agenda is expected to include steps to lift oil supply via the Middle East, with US President Donald Trump also due to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on ongoing conflicts. The currency had benefited in recent sessions as crude eased, although the MCX Crude Oil October 19 contract rose 1.5% to around Rs. 8,970 while remaining close to its 12-day low of Rs. 8,753 set on Monday.

Oil has also faced supply-risk crosscurrents after weekend attacks claimed by Iran-backed Houthis, while Saudi authorities said strikes on Yanbu and other sites were thwarted with no damage to oil infrastructure. In rates, the Federal Reserve lifted policy by 25 bps last week to 3.75%–4.00% and indicated at least one further increase this year, with focus turning to whether upcoming US data validate that path. On charts, USD/INR is holding above its 20-day EMA at 95.54; the 14-day RSI is near 60, with support at 95.53 and 95.00 and resistance around 96.00.

Outlook for Volatility in USD/INR and Oil-Driven Currency Strategies

We recommend that derivative traders brace for heightened volatility in the USD/INR currency pair over the next two weeks. With the exchange rate currently hovering near 95.82, any breakthrough in the upcoming UN General Assembly meetings could trigger a sharp breakout. Historically, sudden shifts in geopolitical energy agreements have been known to swing emerging market currencies by over 1.5% in a matter of days.

Given that India imports over 80% of its crude oil, we must closely monitor the MCX October oil contracts currently trading near Rs. 8,970. A successful diplomatic outcome between the US and Gulf nations could drag oil prices down toward recent lows of Rs. 8,753, which would heavily strengthen the Rupee. For option traders, we suggest buying close-to-the-money straddles on USD/INR to capitalize on this impending volatility regardless of the direction.

Geopolitical and Economic Risk Management for USD/INR Traders

On the other hand, if geopolitical tensions between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels flare up again, USD/INR is highly likely to breach the key 96.00 resistance level. Historical data shows that past drone and missile attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure have rapidly pushed crude prices up by 5% to 8%, dragging the Rupee down in the process. In this scenario, we favor using bull call spreads on USD/INR to limit our risk while positioning for a potential breakout.

We also need to keep a close eye on upcoming US economic data to see if it supports the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance. Since the Fed recently raised interest rates to the 3.75%-4.00% range, any stronger-than-expected US jobs or inflation data will bolster the Greenback. Traders should set tight stop-losses near the 20-day exponential moving average of 95.54 to protect long positions from sudden downside reversals.
