USD/CHF eases as dollar momentum fades, yet Fed hawkishness and SNB zero rates underpin gains

USD/CHF eased on Friday as the US Dollar lost momentum into the weekend, with profit-taking following a strong week underpinned by the Federal Reserve’s hawkish 25 basis point rate increase to a 3.75%–4.00% range. The pair traded around 0.8220 after briefly moving above 0.8250 earlier in the week, its highest level since May 2025. The US Dollar Index reached a seven-week high before slipping back to about 100.26 from an intraday peak of 100.56. In rates, the 10-year US Treasury yield hovered near 5.00%, close to the 2007 high of 5.04% touched earlier this week.

Yields were supported by firm oil prices as the Middle East war kept energy supply risks elevated. The Fed’s dot plot showed 16 of 18 officials expect at least one more hike this year, while recent data were cited as placing inflation above 3%. The pair nevertheless remained on course for a fourth consecutive weekly gain, largely reflecting Swiss Franc weakness, as the Swiss National Bank holds its policy rate at zero and markets looked ahead to its decision next week. Separately, the Franc’s use in carry trades has increased as the Bank of Japan’s policy normalisation and higher Japanese rates reduced the Yen’s appeal as a funding currency.

USD/CHF Derivative Trading Strategies

We recommend that derivative traders use this temporary dip to 0.8220 to build long exposure through USD/CHF bull call spreads. With the Federal Reserve pushing its benchmark rate to the 3.75%-4.00% range, the widening interest rate gap over Switzerland’s 0% rate strongly favors the dollar. Buying call options with a strike price near 0.8300 allows us to capture the next leg up while limiting our downside risk.

Ahead of the Swiss National Bank’s crucial policy decision next week, short-term implied volatility for USD/CHF options has risen toward 7.2%. We can take advantage of this pricier option environment by selling out-of-the-money Swiss Franc put options. This strategy lets us collect attractive premium income while positioning for continued Swiss Franc weakness.

Key Market Drivers and Carry Trade Opportunities

We must also keep a close eye on the US 10-year Treasury yield as it tests the critical 5.00% level. High yields are being sustained by solid energy markets, with Brent crude oil prices holding firm around $78 a barrel on geopolitical concerns. This strong yield backdrop means the US Dollar should remain well-supported against lower-yielding peers in the coming weeks.

Finally, we advise using the Swiss Franc as the primary funding currency for carry trade strategies. Because the Bank of Japan’s rate hikes have made the Yen more expensive to borrow, the zero-rate Franc is now the market’s favorite funding target. By selling the Swiss Franc forward against the high-yielding US Dollar, we can capture steady gains from the widening interest rate differential.
