Gold steadies after oil-led pullback as CFTC longs rise and open interest falls

Gold extended its decline from August peaks near $4,700 per troy ounce before regaining ground later in the week, with the move linked to a retracement in crude benchmarks WTI and Brent rather than shifts in the Fed, the USD or Treasury yields. Softer oil prices tempered inflation expectations, reinforcing the Fed’s cautious stance and prompting short covering into a widely anticipated rate hike on Wednesday. CFTC data for the week to 8 September showed net speculative positioning rising to almost 232K contracts, while the four-week change cooled to just over +14K. Open interest slipped to around 411.2K contracts, pointing to reduced participation even as net longs built; speculative exposure rose to 56.41% with its percentile at 98.4, while the Net Position Percentile stood at 73.5.

In Asia, physical demand diverged: India was muted at elevated prices, while China’s premiums were steady as demand grew. Next week’s diary includes a Trump–Xi summit on Thursday and flash business-activity releases. Technically, XAU/USD was at $4,363.52, below the 200-day SMA at $4,541.17 but above the 100-day SMA at $4,320.72 and the 55-day SMA at $4,273.00; RSI (14) hovered around 50 and ADX (14) was near 16, with support at $4,320.72 then $4,273.00 and resistance at $4,541.17.

Market Drivers and Caution for Derivative Traders

We are seeing the precious metal stabilize around $4,363.52 after a steep drop from its August highs near the $4,700 mark. The main driver of this recent rebound is a sharp drop in crude oil prices, with WTI benchmark prices recently sliding back down toward the $70 range. This drop in energy costs has cooled inflation fears, giving the Federal Reserve room to maintain a cautious stance on interest rates.

We advise derivative traders to be highly cautious before committing to new long positions in the coming weeks. According to the latest CFTC data, net speculative longs managed to rise to nearly 232,000 contracts, but overall open interest dropped to 411,200 contracts. This tells us the bounce was fueled mostly by short sellers rushing to cover their positions, rather than fresh bullish buyers entering the market.

Furthermore, the risk of a crowded long trade has reached extreme levels, with speculative exposure now sitting at a historical 98.4 percentile. Historically, when exposure gets this stretched, even minor negative news can trigger massive profit-taking and rapid sell-offs. Because of this, we recommend utilizing tight trailing stops or using options spreads to limit downside risk.

Physical Demand Trends, Technicals, and Event Risk

We are also tracking a clear split in Asian physical demand, which usually provides a strong floor for prices. While buyers in India are stepping back to wait for cheaper entry points, Chinese investors continue to buy gold steadily to protect against market volatility. This mixed physical appetite suggests that retail demand alone will not be enough to spark the next leg of the rally.

From a technical standpoint, we need to watch the key boundaries of the 200-day simple moving average at $4,541.17 and the 100-day average at $4,320.72. If gold fails to break above the 200-day average, we expect sellers to regain control and push prices lower. A daily close below the 55-day average of $4,273.00 would likely open the door for a deeper correction.

The upcoming Trump-Xi summit on Thursday is the next major macro event that will likely shake up the markets. This meeting, along with the latest global business activity reports, will determine if traders flock back to safe-haven assets or dump them. We believe buying volatility through options straddles is an effective way to position for these high-impact announcements.
