GBP/USD slips below 1.3500 as Fed hike bets lift dollar ahead of BoE decision

GBP/USD finished Monday just under 1.3500, down 0.19%, after sliding to its lowest level since August 14 in the London morning before retracing about half the move. The Dollar strengthened against all major peers as futures implied a 100% probability of a Federal Reserve increase on Wednesday, while the US 10-year Treasury yield touched 5% for the first time since 2023. Sterling outperformed the Euro on the session, with attention turning to the Bank of England’s nine-member rate committee, which votes on Wednesday and releases the decision on Thursday at 11:00 GMT, after the Fed has already announced.

UK data begin at 06:00 GMT on Tuesday, where unemployment is seen at 5% for the three months to July versus 4.9%, claimant count is forecast to rise 8.3K after an 11K fall, and pay growth including bonuses is expected at 3.9% versus 4.1%. Inflation follows at 06:00 GMT on Wednesday: CPI is forecast at 3.1% for August after 2.9%, with core at 2.7% and RPI at 3.5%. The BoE’s July split was 6–3 to hold, with the same 6–3 expected on Thursday; futures price a 47% chance of a hike this week and 95% by 17 December. US overnight funding is 3.63% versus 3.73% in the UK, and a Fed move at 18:00 GMT would lift the US rate to about 3.88%, above sterling for the first time since October; that gap would last until the BoE decision at 11:00 GMT on Thursday and could extend to the next meeting on 5 November. Separately, the BoE’s bond run-off is expected to slow to £50bn from £70bn, with active sales at £19.5bn versus £21bn; the Bank estimates the programme has added 0.25 percentage points to gilt yields, and the repricing implies £1.5bn less selling. Markets also focus on the Fed’s 3.75%–4.00% outcome, fully priced, and its projections: June’s dots indicated 3.8% for end-2026 and 3.6% for 2027, while futures imply 4.18% and 4.55%. US retail sales are seen up 0.9% after a 0.6% drop, with the control group stripping fuel, cars and building materials; Friday brings UK retail sales seen down 0.2% after a 0.5% fall, a Fed governor speech at 07:30, and US industrial production at 13:15. Technically, resistance sits just above 1.3550, with 1.3600 as the level that would reopen the August 21 high near 1.3700; support is just above 1.3450, under the 50-day EMA near 1.3500, where Monday closed seven pips above after trading through, then the mid-August low just above 1.3400. The Stoch RSI is near 16, its weakest since April, while the downside bias holds below 1.3550 with 1.3450 and 1.3400 in view.

Derivative Positioning for Dollar Strength

We advise derivative traders to position for a stronger Dollar and a weaker Pound in the coming weeks as interest rate dynamics shift in favor of the US. With the Federal Reserve poised to raise rates, the US overnight rate will surpass the UK rate for the first time in nearly three years. We suggest utilizing short-term GBP/USD put options to capitalize on this impending yield gap.

Historically, when the US-UK yield spread moves in favor of the Dollar, GBP/USD has experienced average declines of 2% to 3% over the following month. The US 10-year Treasury yield hovering near 5% reinforces this bearish outlook for the Pound, as capital continues to flow toward higher-yielding American assets. We can exploit this trend by targeting the 1.3450 support level, with a secondary objective at 1.3400.

Risk Management and Tactical Trade Ideas

While the daily Stochastic RSI near 16 indicates the market is temporarily oversold, we should view any brief relief rallies as selling opportunities rather than a trend reversal. If a minor bounce occurs, we recommend establishing short positions or buying puts near the heavy resistance at 1.3550. To protect capital, we must place strict stop-loss orders or option invalidation points just above the 1.3600 threshold.

We must also closely watch the Bank of England’s upcoming vote split, as a surprise shift toward a hawkish stance could temporarily disrupt our bearish thesis. Conversely, if the central bank confirms a slowdown in its bond-selling program, gilt yields will likely ease, further reducing the Pound’s appeal. By balancing our option positions to account for Wednesday’s US retail sales data, we can navigate the expected volatility without taking excessive directional risk.
