EUR/CAD Dips as Oil Rally Bolsters Loonie, Canada CPI Steady and ECB Guidance Limited

EUR/CAD slipped to about 1.6060 on Monday, down 0.17% on the day, as the Canadian Dollar drew support from firmer oil while domestic inflation data left the near-term policy picture broadly unchanged. Canada’s CPI rose 3% YoY in August, matching July and expectations, although it fell 0.1% on the month after a 0.5% gain in July. The BoC core measure edged up to 2.4% YoY from 2.3%, while Common CPI eased to 2.6% from 2.7%; Trimmed CPI and Median CPI held at 1.9% and 2%. The BoC recently kept its policy rate at 2.25%, and it has pointed to headline inflation hovering around 3% largely due to higher petrol prices.

Oil added fresh impetus to the CAD: WTI traded near $100, up more than 15% this month as Middle East tensions raised supply concerns. Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline after a drone attack, and officials cited by the Associated Press said it is expected to be mostly out of service for several weeks. In Europe, the EUR lacked new upside drivers after the ECB raised key rates last week but offered limited forward guidance, with Christine Lagarde saying the Governing Council did not debate the future rate path. ECB Council member Peter Kazimir, who also leads Slovakia’s NBS, flagged risks from gas and electricity prices and said all options would be considered at the next meeting.

Derivative Positioning on EUR/CAD Weakness

We recommend that derivative traders position for continued downward pressure on the EUR/CAD cross in the coming weeks. With WTI crude trading near $100 per barrel—marking a 15% surge this month—the Canadian Dollar has robust fundamental backing. Historically, a sustained 10% rise in oil prices correlates with a 1.5% to 2% appreciation in the CAD against the Euro, making short EUR/CAD positions highly attractive.

We suggest utilizing bearish option strategies, such as buying near-the-money EUR/CAD put options, to capture this downward momentum while limiting risk. The currency pair has already slipped to around 1.6060, and a push toward the 1.5850 support level is likely if the Saudi pipeline disruption drags on for several weeks. By using put options, we can avoid the spot market’s daily noise while positioning for a deeper drop.

Interest Rate Divergence and Volatility Opportunities

On the interest rate side, we should monitor the widening policy divergence as the Bank of Canada keeps rates steady at 2.25% while the Eurozone grapples with volatile energy costs. EUR/CAD one-month implied volatility has climbed to roughly 7.8%, reflecting heightened uncertainty around European monetary policy. We can exploit this by entering short-term volatility swaps or calendar spreads to profit from sudden swings in the Euro.
