Chile Central Bank Holds Rates at 4.50% as Traders Eye Swaps and Peso Options

Chile’s central bank, BCCh, kept the monetary policy rate unchanged at 4.50% at its September meeting, in line with consensus expectations. The decision reflects a wait-and-see approach as policymakers assess the outlook, with weak domestic activity and a softening labour market tempering concern over external inflation pressures, even as inflation expectations remain anchored.

The balance of risks has shifted as higher oil prices and the prospect of further Fed tightening keep the possibility of future BCCh hikes on the table. For now, policy is expected to remain on hold at 4.50%, with any move likely to depend on whether inflation expectations drift from target or whether Chilean activity shows a clearer recovery.

Derivative Trading Strategy in a Stable Rate Environment

With the Central Bank of Chile holding its benchmark rate steady at 4.50% this September, we advise derivative traders to position for a prolonged period of rate stability. The Chilean Camara swap curve is likely to flatten as the market prices out immediate expectations of further rate adjustments. We recommend focusing on short-to-medium-term interest rate swaps to capture yield stability while the central bank remains on hold.

Macroeconomic Backdrop and Hedging Approaches

Our cautious trading stance is supported by Chile’s fragile economic backdrop, with the national unemployment rate remaining stubbornly high at 8.7%. Additionally, Chile’s GDP growth for the second quarter of 2026 crept up by a modest 1.6% year-on-year, proving that domestic demand is still weak. These stagnant indicators suggest the central bank cannot easily hike rates without risking a deeper economic slowdown.

We must also navigate external pressures, especially with global crude oil prices fluctuating around $80 per barrel and US interest rates remaining elevated. This policy divergence has pressured the Chilean Peso, which has depreciated by roughly 5.2% against the US dollar over the past quarter. To manage this risk, we suggest utilizing USD/CLP currency options, specifically implied volatility strategies like straddles, to hedge against sudden currency swings.

Historical data shows that when the central bank enters a prolonged pause, interest rate volatility compresses before the next major move. During similar pause phases, such as in late 2018, range-bound derivative structures yielded the highest risk-adjusted returns. Consequently, we suggest entering into range-accrual swaps to exploit this anticipated period of range-bound rate behavior over the next few weeks.
