The S&P Global Manufacturing PMI for Brazil has dropped from 47.6 to 47 in January. This marks a further contraction in the manufacturing sector.

The fall in PMI suggests ongoing economic challenges for businesses. The pressures facing the economy continue to impact manufacturing.

Economic Headwinds

The January manufacturing data confirms a continued slowdown, suggesting economic headwinds are building. We see this as a signal that the Brazilian Real (BRL) could weaken further against the US dollar in the coming weeks. The USD/BRL exchange rate already climbed by 4% in the final quarter of 2025, and this negative data point provides more fuel for that trend.

This report is also bearish for Brazilian equities, particularly for industrial and materials companies listed on the Bovespa index. We should consider buying put options on the EWZ ETF or shorting Bovespa futures to position for a potential downturn. During a similar manufacturing slump in 2023, the index saw a correction of over 7% in the following two months.

With the economy weakening, we believe the central bank may be forced to consider cutting the Selic interest rate later this year. Brazil’s IPCA inflation ended 2025 at 3.8%, giving the bank some room to maneuver if this economic softness persists. Traders might look at buying Brazilian interest rate futures to speculate on a more dovish monetary policy stance.

Market Volatility Opportunity

Overall, this PMI figure increases economic uncertainty, which typically leads to higher market volatility. We can expect implied volatility on Bovespa options to rise from its current levels. This environment could make strategies like long straddles on major Brazilian stocks or the index itself potentially profitable.
