USD/JPY Consolidates After Sharp Fall, Bears Eye 156.00 Support as 157.80 Caps Rallies

USD/JPY remains under pressure after a steep slide last Thursday, which drove strong downside momentum. Following a dip to 156.06, the pair rebounded and finished little changed at 156.86, a rise of 0.06%. With conditions described as deeply oversold, near-term price action is expected to pause, with consolidation seen between 156.50 and 157.50.

Over a 1–3 week horizon, the bias still points lower, with support levels flagged at 156.00 and 155.50 while the pair remains below 157.80, which is framed as strong resistance. Beyond that, the longer-term risk is skewed towards renewed weakness, with January’s low at 152.08 identified as a reference point for a deeper drawdown.

Short-Term Consolidation and Downside Outlook

We see a brief phase of consolidation for USD/JPY between 156.50 and 157.50 following the recent sharp decline. However, this pause should not be mistaken for a trend reversal, as downside momentum remains strong. Over the next one to three weeks, we expect the pair to resume its slide toward key support levels at 156.00 and 155.50.

Derivative traders should use any short-term bounces toward 157.50 to build bearish positions or purchase put options. The risk-to-reward ratio strongly favors short setups as long as spot prices remain below our primary resistance barrier of 157.80. A clean breach above 157.80 would invalidate this bearish outlook, making it a natural placement for stop-loss orders.

Trading Implications and Options Market Signals

Historical price action shows that when USD/JPY breaks down from multi-month highs, downside momentum often carries spot prices straight into key support zones. Compounding this, shifting interest rate expectations have compressed yield differentials, skewing longer-term risks toward the January low of 152.08. Recent options market data reflects this shift, with put-call skew statistics showing higher demand for downside Yen protection.

To trade this movement effectively, we recommend using put bear spreads or short futures positions with strictly managed risk. Selling upside calls above the 157.80 resistance level can also help fund downside put purchases during this consolidation phase. Taking partial profits around 156.00 while trailing stops on remaining positions toward 155.50 and 152.08 allows traders to capture maximum downside potential.
