Sterling Holds Near 1.3360 as Markets Eye Fed Decision and BoE Rate Hike Bets

GBP/USD found dip demand around 1.3360 in Friday’s Asian session, interrupting a mild retreat from its highest level since 16 September. Price action remains capped below the 1.3400 handle as markets position for Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision, where rates are expected to stay unchanged. With no updated projections, attention turns to the rate statement and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference, while Thursday’s Advance Q3 GDP and the PCE Price Index are set to shape expectations for the policy path and, by extension, US Dollar demand.

A sharp fall in US bond yields has restrained a US Dollar rebound from a three-week low hit last Thursday, while sterling has been underpinned by expectations of tighter Bank of England policy after firmer UK inflation and resilient labour data. Markets are pricing roughly 95% odds of a 25 bps BoE hike on 5 November, even as they assign nearly an 80% probability of a US rate rise in December. Geopolitical risk linked to stalled US-Iran talks, alongside Houthi threats against Riyadh’s King Khalid Airport, may support the safe-haven dollar and limit GBP/USD upside. Technically, resistance sits at the 100-day SMA (1.3390) and the 50.0% Fibonacci level (1.3403), then 1.3466 and 1.3556; support is seen at 1.3341, 1.3263 and 1.3137. GBP accounts for 12% of FX turnover, averaging $630 billion a day in 2022, with GBP/USD at 11% of FX, GBP/JPY at 3% and EUR/GBP at 2%, and BoE policy targets inflation of around 2%.

Tactical Considerations Around Key Technical Levels

We should hold off on aggressive long derivative positions until the GBP/USD pair cleanly breaks and closes above the 1.3400 resistance level. This key hurdle aligns with the 50% Fibonacci retracement at 1.3403 and the 100-day Simple Moving Average, making it a critical pivot point for buyers. Waiting for confirmation helps us avoid fake breakouts ahead of upcoming monetary policy announcements.

Strategic Positioning Ahead Of Macro Events

With financial markets pricing in roughly a 95% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike by the Bank of England on November 5, the fundamental backdrop supports buying into shallow dips. Historically, foreign exchange data from the Bank for International Settlements shows that Cable commands roughly 11% of global daily currency turnover, providing deep liquidity during central bank decisions. We can monitor entry points near key support levels at 1.3341 and 1.3263 to build bullish positions on pullbacks.

We must also prepare for quick shifts in sentiment as major US economic data releases, such as Q3 GDP and PCE inflation figures, drive short-term dollar demand. A confirmed daily close above 1.3403 opens the door toward 1.3466 and potentially 1.3556 in the coming weeks. Utilizing structured risk management like defined-risk options strategies will help protect capital against unexpected spikes from ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
