Gold (XAU/USD) fell below $4,100 on Thursday as the US Dollar rebounded and energy-led inflation fears reinforced expectations for higher-for-longer rates. The metal traded around $4,059, its lowest since 5 August, after reports that the US and Israel have drawn up plans for renewed strikes on Iran following the US midterm elections, with potential targets including energy infrastructure. Separately, tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis escalated, with fresh attacks reported on the Shaybah oil field and King Fahd International Airport, while the US State Department ordered non-emergency staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia.

Oil firmed on supply-risk concerns, with WTI rebounding towards $100, up 1.40% and near five-week highs, adding to pressure on central banks to keep policy restrictive. Markets are focusing on next week’s Fed decision, where rates are expected to be left unchanged after a 25 bps rise in September; pricing implies another move in December, with the CME FedWatch Tool at 89%. The DXY was around 101.78 after a three-week low of 101.45, while the 10-year Treasury yield stood near 5.04%, down over 1% on the day. Technicals show XAU/USD near the lower Bollinger Band at $4,069, with resistance at $4,153 and $4,237, and support at $4,000 then $3,950.

Derivative Strategy In A High-Rate Environment

We recommend adopting a sell-on-rally approach for gold derivatives as high energy prices continue to push central banks toward tight monetary policy. With WTI crude oil hovering near $100 per barrel and 10-year US Treasury yields standing around 5.04%, higher borrowing costs reduce the appeal of holding non-yielding metals. Historically, elevated bond yields above 5% create strong headwinds for precious metals, even during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

Key Technical Levels And Tactics

We should look for short-side derivative opportunities if gold bounces toward resistance at the 20-period moving average near $4,153 or the upper band near $4,237. Technical indicators show lingering downside pressure, with the Relative Strength Index in the high-30s and momentum turning downward. Derivatives traders can use put options or structured spread strategies to manage risk ahead of next week’s central bank rate announcement.

On the downside, we should monitor immediate support at $4,069, with secondary targets at the $4,000 psychological mark and the June lows near $3,950. Market pricing currently reflects an 89% chance of another rate hike in December, which helps keep the US Dollar well-supported. If prices break cleanly above $4,237, we would need to shift our outlook toward the $4,400 resistance zone.
