Rupee Rally Pauses as Oil Surge Lifts USD/INR; RBI Support and IPO Inflows in Focus

The Indian rupee halted a seven-session rise versus the US dollar, with USD/INR rebounding to about 94.91 after drawing bids near a seven-week low of 97.33. The move came as oil prices jumped, weighing on import-dependent currencies: the MCX crude contract expiring 19 November rose 2.8% to around Rs. 9,500. Middle East tensions added to the energy bid after a drone attack on Saudi Arabia’s Shaybah oil field left two dead and two injured; oil briefly spiked on talk of a broader US diplomatic drawdown from the Gulf before gains moderated when Washington said the measure was limited to Saudi Arabia.

Earlier rupee support was linked to Reserve Bank of India activity in spot and Non-Deliverable Forwards (NDFs), plus steps aimed at curbing US-dollar demand and inflows tied to Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213 crore IPO, launched on 21 October 2026 and open until 23 October. Markets are now awaiting flash October PMI releases for India and the US on Friday, with the S&P Global reading expected to show continued but moderating expansion. Technically, USD/INR remains below the 20-day EMA at 95.44, while the RSI sits at 38.68; resistance is seen near 95.44 and support at 94.15.

Options Strategies To Navigate Rising Volatility

We advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility in the USD/INR pair as rising crude oil prices threaten to undo recent rupee gains. India imports roughly 85% to 86% of its domestic crude oil requirements, making the currency particularly sensitive to global energy disruptions. With crude futures surging nearly 3% in recent sessions, buying short-dated USD/INR call options offers an effective hedge against sudden spikes in the exchange rate.

Geopolitical friction in the Middle East continues to inject risk premiums into energy markets, driving up implied volatility across foreign exchange contracts. We recommend utilizing options spread strategies, such as call spreads on USD/INR or energy contracts, to manage premium costs while capitalizing on upward momentum. Historical data shows that sudden energy supply fears elevate option premiums rapidly, making unhedged short positions especially risky over the coming weeks.

IPO Inflows, Technical Levels, And Key Events

While massive foreign fund inflows from the ongoing ₹30,213 crore IPO provide temporary rupee support, active intervention by the central bank will likely cap aggressive exchange rate moves. Technically, USD/INR trades near 94.91, remaining capped under its 20-day Exponential Moving Average around 95.44. We suggest watching this key resistance level closely, as a failure to close above it keeps the broader bearish trend intact toward strong support at 94.15.

Traders should closely monitor the upcoming private sector PMI releases from both India and the US this Friday to gauge broader macroeconomic strength. With the Relative Strength Index hovering near oversold territory at 38.68, economic surprises could trigger quick, sharp reversals in currency futures. We favor executing defined-risk options strategies to trade potential technical breakouts while protecting trading capital against sudden sentiment shifts.
