Price gets all the headlines. Volume tells the real story. In manual trading, volume refers to the total number of units traded for a product during a specific time period — whether that’s a single minute, an hour, a trading session, or an entire day. Every time a buyer and seller complete a transaction, that exchange contributes to the volume count for that instrument.
Volume is one of the oldest and most reliable indicators available to traders. It doesn’t predict price — it confirms it. And that distinction is everything.
Most traders focus exclusively on price action. Experienced manual traders know that price without volume is an incomplete picture.
A rising market supported by rising volume signals genuine buying conviction — a strong indicator that a trend has real substance behind it. Conversely, a price rally on declining volume is a warning sign; the move may lack the participation needed to sustain itself.
One of the most common mistakes in manual trading is chasing false breakouts — price moves that pierce a key level only to reverse immediately. Volume is the filter. A breakout accompanied by a surge in volume carries far greater credibility than one on thin participation. If the volume isn’t there, the breakout likely isn’t real.
Unusually high volume at market extremes can signal exhaustion. When price makes a new high but volume begins to contract, the buying pressure driving the move may be fading. Manual traders who spot this divergence early are positioned to act before the broader market catches on.
Volume and liquidity are closely linked. High-volume instruments — major forex pairs, blue-chip indices, heavily traded equities — offer tighter spreads and smoother order execution. Trading low-volume instruments exposes you to wider spreads and unpredictable price gaps that can undermine even a well-constructed strategy.
Integrating volume into your analysis doesn’t require complex indicators. Start here:
Volume spikes around news events — A sudden surge following an economic release confirms genuine market interest and often precedes sustained directional moves
Volume at support and resistance — High volume at a key level suggests strong institutional activity; low volume suggests the level may not hold under pressure
Volume divergence — When price and volume move in opposite directions, treat it as an early signal that the prevailing trend may be weakening
