Every candlestick on your chart tells a story. The body tells you where price opened and closed. The shadow tells you where the market truly went — and what happened when it got there.
A shadow is a line indicator located both above and below a candlestick body, representing the highest and lowest prices of a security during a specific trading period. Also called a wick or tail, the shadow extends beyond the real body to mark the outer boundaries of price movement before the market reversed direction within that session.
Where the body reflects the open-to-close range, the shadows reveal the full extent of buying and selling pressure — making them one of the most information-rich elements on any candlestick chart.
The upper shadow extends above the candle body to the session high. A long upper shadow indicates that buyers pushed price significantly higher during the period — but sellers stepped in forcefully and dragged it back down before the close. This rejection of higher prices is a classic signal of bearish resistance at that level.
The lower shadow extends below the candle body to the session low. A long lower shadow signals that sellers drove price aggressively lower — only for buyers to absorb that pressure and push it back up before the close. This rejection of lower prices is widely interpreted as bullish support near that level.
Candlestick shadows are a direct window into the battle between buyers and sellers within any given session.
Long shadows signal indecision and rejection. When a shadow is significantly longer than the candle body, the market tested a level and was forcefully turned away. The longer the shadow, the stronger the rejection — and the more significant the signal.
Short or absent shadows signal conviction. A candle with minimal shadow suggests price moved cleanly in one direction and closed near its extreme — decisive momentum with little pushback from the opposing side.
Hammer — Short body with a long lower shadow and little upper shadow. Forms at the bottom of a downtrend and signals a potential bullish reversal as sellers were rejected and buyers reclaimed control.
Shooting Star — Short body with a long upper shadow and minimal lower shadow. Forms at the top of an uptrend and signals a potential bearish reversal as buyers were rejected near the session high.
Doji — Extremely small body with shadows in both directions. Signals market indecision — neither side established meaningful control during the period.
