Every trader knows you can buy an asset and profit when its price rises. But fewer realise that financial markets offer an equally powerful opportunity in the opposite direction and it begins with a single instruction: sell.
In manual trading, to sell means ordering an asset with the intention to buy it back at a lower price in the future, earning a profit from the difference. This is also known as opening a short position, and it is one of the most important concepts any manual trader can master.
The logic is the mirror image of buying: instead of buying low and selling high, you sell high first and aim to buy back lower. The profit is the gap between your entry sell price and the lower price at which you close the position.
When you initiate a sell, you are entering the market on the assumption that the asset’s price will fall. As the price declines, your short position increases in value. When you close — by buying back the asset — the difference between your sell price and your buy-back price is your profit.
For example: you sell EUR/USD at 1.1000. The price falls to 1.0950. You close by buying back at 1.0950. The 50-pip difference is your gain.
Using CFDs (Contracts for Difference), this process is straightforward. You do not need to borrow the underlying asset or navigate complex settlement procedures. A single click opens your short position, another closes it — making CFDs the preferred vehicle for manual traders selling across forex, indices, equities, and commodities.
When technical or fundamental analysis signals a likely decline — a confirmed downtrend, a broken support level, or deteriorating macro data — selling aligns your position with the prevailing bearish direction.
Earnings disappointments, central bank policy shifts, geopolitical shocks, and regulatory surprises all create rapid selling opportunities. Manual traders who identify these catalysts early can capture significant moves before the broader market fully reprices.
Selling is not always pure speculation. Traders with existing long positions can open a sell on a correlated instrument to offset downside risk — using the short as a protective hedge during periods of elevated uncertainty.
Unlimited upside risk — Unlike buying, a short position has theoretically no ceiling on losses if price rises sharply against you
Short squeeze exposure — A heavily shorted asset that rallies can force short sellers to close simultaneously, amplifying the move and compounding losses
Timing discipline — A correctly identified bearish view can still move against you for extended periods; disciplined stop loss placement is non-negotiable
Risk Warning: Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
Trading Contracts for Difference (CFDs) carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. The use of leverage can significantly magnify gains and losses and may result in losses exceeding your initial investment. Prior to engaging in CFD trading, you should ensure that you fully understand the risks involved, carefully consider your investment objectives, financial situation, and level of experience, and seek independent advice where necessary. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Please refer to our legal documents for a comprehensive overview of the risks associated with CFD trading.
