Profit and loss, commonly abbreviated to P\&L, is a statement that presents the earnings, expenditures, and net income of an investment, providing an overview of its financial state. In trading, the term is most often used to describe the running total of gains and losses across a trading account or individual position.
Realised P\&L refers to the profit or loss locked in once a position has been closed, while unrealised P\&L reflects the current paper gain or loss on a position that’s still open. Unrealised P\&L can change at any moment as the market moves, and only becomes fixed once the position is actually closed.
Most trading platforms display both individual position P\&L and an overall account-level summary, updating in real time as prices move. Reviewing P\&L regularly, rather than only after closing a position, helps a trader stay aware of current exposure and how the account is performing as a whole.
In a corporate context, a profit and loss statement, sometimes called an income statement, summarises a company’s revenue and expenses over a specific period, ultimately arriving at net profit or loss. While the format differs from a trading account summary, the underlying concept of tracking what’s been earned against what’s been spent remains the same.
As a precaution, unrealised P\&L on an open position is only a snapshot and can swing significantly before a trade is closed, particularly in volatile markets. Treating an unrealised gain as locked in before actually closing the position can lead to overconfidence about account performance.
Profit and loss is the clearest, most direct measure of how a trade, account, or business is actually performing at any given moment. Reviewing it regularly, and understanding the difference between realised and unrealised figures, helps keep expectations grounded in what’s actually been achieved.
