Price action is the movement of a product’s price over time, often analysed using technical analysis. Rather than relying primarily on indicators, price action trading focuses on reading the raw movement of price itself, including candlestick patterns, support and resistance levels, and overall trend structure.
Price action traders typically study a chart stripped of most indicators, paying close attention to how price behaves around key levels, the shape of recent candles, and the overall structure of highs and lows. The aim is to read what the market is doing directly, rather than relying on a derived signal calculated from past price data.
Patterns such as pin bars, engulfing candles, and inside bars are frequently used within price action trading to identify potential turning points or continuation signals. These patterns are typically given more weight when they form near an already significant support or resistance level, rather than in the middle of an unremarkable price range.
Indicator-based trading relies on calculated values, such as moving averages or oscillators, to generate signals, while price action trading works directly from the chart itself. Many traders combine both approaches, using price action as the primary read on the market while using select indicators for additional confirmation.
As a precaution, reading price action involves a degree of subjectivity, and two traders can look at the same chart and reach different conclusions. Patterns that look clear in hindsight aren’t always as obvious in real time, so it’s worth practising and back-testing any price action approach before relying on it with real capital.
Price action trading puts the raw movement of price at the centre of the decision-making process, rather than a calculated indicator. Developing the skill to read it well takes practice, but it remains one of the most widely used approaches across technical analysis.
