A net position is the value of a trader’s position once the initial cost of setting it up has been subtracted. Rather than just the size of the trade, it reflects what a trader actually stands to gain or lose after expenses are accounted for, giving a more honest picture than the trade’s headline size alone.
Costs such as the spread, commissions, or financing charges all reduce the figure below the headline value of the trade itself. The net position narrows as these costs accumulate over the life of the trade.
Looking only at the size of a trade can overstate what’s actually at stake, so calculating the net position gives a more accurate picture of a position’s true value at any given point.
Working out a net position generally starts with the value of the trade itself, then subtracts every cost associated with opening and maintaining it, including the spread paid at entry, any commission charged, and financing costs accrued while the position remains open. The resulting figure reflects what the position is genuinely worth at that moment, rather than its size before any of these costs are taken into account, giving a more grounded view of where things actually stand.
Gross exposure looks at the total size of a position without adjusting for costs, while net position narrows that figure down to what’s actually at stake once costs are factored in. The gap between the two can widen the longer a position is held, particularly if it involves ongoing financing charges, which is why some traders check both figures rather than relying on just one to understand a position fully.
Reviewing how a net position changes over the life of a trade, rather than only at the point of opening or closing it, can reveal how much of its value is being eroded by ongoing costs versus genuine market movement. This distinction matters particularly for positions held over longer periods, where the cumulative effect of costs can become a significant part of the overall outcome, separate entirely from how the underlying market itself has performed.
Some trading platforms display net position directly alongside other account details, updating the figure continuously as the underlying market moves and as financing charges accrue over time. Having this figure readily visible removes the need to calculate it manually, making it easier for traders to factor net position into everyday decisions about whether to hold, add to, or close out an existing trade.
A net position strips away the costs of trading to show what’s genuinely on the line. Checking it regularly, rather than relying on the trade’s face value, gives a clearer read on where things stand, especially for positions held over a longer stretch of time.
