A hammer candlestick is a single-candle pattern that often appears at the bottom of a downtrend and points to a possible bullish reversal. It has a small real body near the top of the range, a long lower wick (or shadow) at least twice the length of the body, and little to no upper wick. The shape shows that sellers pushed price sharply lower during the session, but buyers stepped in and drove it back up to close near the open.
A valid hammer shares several characteristics that distinguish it from ordinary price action:
A long lower shadow that is at least twice the height of the real body.
A small real body positioned near the top of the trading range.
Little or no upper shadow.
It forms after a clear downtrend, where it carries the most meaning.
A bullish (green) body can be read as marginally stronger than a bearish one, though the long lower wick is the key feature.
Several candles share the hammer’s shape but differ in location and meaning:
| Pattern | Trend Before | Wick Position | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hammer | Downtrend | Long lower wick | Potential bullish reversal |
| Inverted hammer | Downtrend | Long upper wick | Potential bullish reversal |
| Hanging man | Uptrend | Long lower wick | Potential bearish reversal |
The long lower shadow reflects a rejection of lower prices within the session. Buyers absorbed the selling pressure and regained control before the close, which can hint that bearish momentum is fading. Many traders treat the hammer as an early alert rather than an outright entry signal.
A hammer on its own is far from certainty. False signals are common, particularly in choppy or low-volume conditions, and a single candle says nothing about how the next session will unfold. Experienced traders usually wait for a bullish confirmation candle, and often combine the pattern with support levels, volume, or other indicators before committing to a position.
The hammer is most useful when it is read alongside the wider trend, nearby support, and overall market sentiment rather than in isolation. Used this way, it becomes one piece of evidence in a broader analysis rather than a standalone trigger. At VT Markets, traders can study candlestick behaviour across forex, indices, and commodities to build a more complete view of momentum shifts.
