A dead cat bounce is a brief, temporary recovery in the price of an asset during an otherwise sustained decline.
The price rises for a short period, tempting buyers, before resuming its downward move and often falling below the earlier low.
In simple terms, a dead cat bounce is a short rally that fails and gives way to more selling.
After a sharp fall, some traders close short positions to take gains, while bargain hunters step in expecting a recovery. This buying can lift the price for a while and create the impression that the worst is over. When the underlying selling pressure returns, the bounce fades and the downtrend continues. The pattern gets its name from the grim idea that even a falling object can bounce briefly.
How traders try to identify it
A strong prior downtrend before the bounce
A recovery on relatively weak volume
A stall near a former support level that has become resistance
A renewed break to new lows after the bounce
| Feature | Dead cat bounce | Genuine reversal |
|---|---|---|
| Trend after | Continues down | Turns up |
| Volume on rally | Often weak | Often strong |
| Duration | Short-lived | Sustained |
Because a temporary bounce and a genuine recovery can look alike at first, traders usually seek supporting evidence before treating a rebound as a real turn. Improving volume, a shift in the underlying fundamentals, or a break above a clear resistance level can all add weight. A rebound on thin volume with no change in the wider picture is more likely to fade, so many traders wait for confirmation rather than assuming the low is in. Volume is often the most telling clue, as a recovery on weak participation tends to carry less conviction than one backed by broad and sustained buying interest.
A dead cat bounce can only be confirmed with hindsight, once the price has resumed falling. This makes it a caution rather than a precise signal, and traders can be caught out by mistaking a real recovery for a failed one, or the reverse. Combining price action with volume and the wider trend helps, but uncertainty remains a constant feature of these moves.
Take a share that has fallen sharply on bad news. It suddenly rebounds for a day or two as short sellers take profits, tempting buyers back in. Then the decline resumes and the brief recovery fades. Recognising this only with hindsight is common, which is why traders look for wider confirmation.
The dead cat bounce is a reminder that not every rise within a falling market marks the bottom. Recognising the pattern encourages traders to be cautious about buying into weakness too early, and to manage the risk of any position carefully, since a temporary bounce can reverse without warning.
