Sterling Holds Above 1.3200 as Rising US Yields Lift Dollar Ahead of Fed and Budget Risks

Sterling held just above 1.3200 against the Dollar, extending a run in which each session’s low since 24 September has come within half a cent of that level, with Wednesday making it ten in a row. The Dollar firmed as yields pushed higher; the US 10-year Treasury auction cleared at 5.30%, the highest for a 10-year sale since November 2000. In the UK, the 30-year gilt yield moved back above 6%, a threshold first breached on 1 October and last seen in 1998, while the Pound remained at its strongest versus the Euro since June 2025.

Federal Reserve minutes for the 15–16 September meeting showed all 19 participants supported the 3.75%–4.00% rate increase, with most judging another rise likely by year end and several describing current settings as only mildly restrictive, if at all. Markets still priced an October move at about 17% before and after the release, with the remaining choices at the 28 October and 9 December meetings; an October hike would widen the gap relative to the UK Bank Rate of 3.75% ahead of the BoE’s 5 November decision. Traders priced a November BoE hike near 80%, while policy and fiscal catalysts cluster around 28 October, when the Fed decides and the Chancellor’s Budget is due, with a funding gap estimated at £22 billion or more. Technically, 1.3300 has capped trade since 24 September except for a brief 30 September spike, 1.3250 has re-emerged as resistance, and 1.3150 remains a downside marker last seen in late June; the daily Stoch RSI rose for five sessions to above 20 and near 25, its first reading there since 10 September.

GBP/USD Trading Opportunity and Technical Outlook

We see a compelling short-term buying opportunity in GBP/USD as the pair continues to defend the critical 1.3200 support level. This floor has held firm for ten consecutive sessions, creating a high-probability setup for traders looking to capture a rebound. If the level holds, we expect a recovery toward the 1.3250 resistance, with a secondary target at 1.3300.

To manage risk, we advise placing tight stop-loss orders just below 1.3150, as a daily close below this point would invalidate our bullish outlook. The daily Stochastic Relative Strength Index (Stoch RSI) has recently climbed back above 20, currently sitting near 25, which historically signals that selling pressure is exhausting. This technical rebound aligns with previous patterns where a double-bottom structure near key psychological figures preceded multi-week rallies.

Event Risks, Yields, and Policy Considerations

However, we must remain cautious of the shifting yield landscape as U.S. 10-year Treasuries recently cleared at a staggering 5.30% in auction. This is the highest yield we have seen since the dot-com era in late 2000, and it naturally exerts strong upward pressure on the greenback. Meanwhile, Britain’s 30-year gilt yield climbing back above 6% shows that the UK is paying a heavy premium to borrow, which could eventually drag on the Pound.

Looking ahead, we are tracking a major volatility cluster on Wednesday, October 28, when Chancellor Healey’s UK Budget is delivered on the exact same day as the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. Historically, such rare double-event days cause average daily trading ranges for GBP/USD to expand by over 150%, meaning we should expect sharp, two-way price swings. Given the £22 billion fiscal gap the UK needs to close, any signs of budget instability could send gilt yields higher and trigger sudden sterling liquidations.

With the Bank of England’s next rate decision set for November 5, we will be closely monitoring upcoming speeches from monetary policymakers this week. Markets are currently pricing in an 80% chance of a November rate hike, a probability that could jump even higher if upcoming commentary highlights persistent inflation risks. With Brent crude oil trading back above $100 a barrel, energy-driven inflation remains a very real threat that could force both central banks into more aggressive tightening than currently anticipated.
