CFTC data show speculators expand net short sterling positions amid softer UK growth and yield pressure

The CFTC’s latest data show that non-commercial net positions in sterling weakened, with the GBP balance falling to £-91.1K from £-82.6K previously. That shift points to a larger net short stance in speculative positioning over the reporting week.

The move represents a deterioration of £-8.5K versus the prior reading, reinforcing that bearish exposure to GBP increased on a net basis. The figures refer to futures positioning captured by the CFTC and track changes in non-commercial accounts’ aggregate net longs and shorts.

Speculators Increase Bearish Bets Against The Pound

We are seeing a clear sign that big speculative traders are losing faith in the British pound as net short positions climbed to -91.1k contracts from -82.6k. This shift shows that institutional money is actively positioning for a weaker currency in the coming weeks. We believe derivative traders should respect this strong bearish momentum rather than trying to fight the trend.

Bearish Outlook Driven By Economic Fundamentals And Yield Pressure

This pessimistic outlook matches recent UK economic data, including a sluggish GDP growth rate of just 0.1% in the latest quarterly reports and cooling inflation figures. With the Bank of England facing pressure to cut interest rates faster than its global peers, the pound is losing its yield advantage. We should look to exploit this trend by focusing on short GBP positions against stronger currencies like the US dollar.

However, we must also be cautious because heavily one-sided market positioning can sometimes trigger sudden short squeezes. If upcoming UK retail sales or services data beat expectations, traders who are caught short might be forced to buy back their positions quickly, driving the price up temporarily. Therefore, we recommend using tight stop-loss orders on short positions and waiting for temporary rallies to sell into, rather than chasing the market downward.
