Markets Eye Fresh Jobs and PCE Data as September FOMC Minutes Fade in Influence

The September FOMC minutes are expected to be dated by later releases, with the employment report and PCE data arriving after the meeting and reshaping the near-term read on conditions. As a result, the document may land with less market impact than usual, even as it frames the Committee’s thinking at the time.

Even so, the minutes are likely to show internal differences over how much additional tightening is still required this year, while also pointing to broad agreement that policy should remain restrictive. Consistent with the SEP and subsequent Fed communication, “most” participants are expected to have indicated there was no urgency around the next policy step.

Outdated Minutes and Market Focus

We should look past the upcoming September FOMC minutes, as they are already outdated by the latest economic releases. Recent employment data showing payroll growth and PCE inflation remaining around 2.2% have completely shifted the market’s focus. Because of this lag, we suggest focusing on real-time economic indicators rather than reacting heavily to the Fed’s stale discussions.

Implications for Market Volatility and Trading Strategy

Historically, when inflation and labor data diverge quickly after a meeting, the subsequent minutes lose their predictive power for near-term rate decisions. We expect the minutes to show a division among policymakers regarding the need for further rate hikes, but a shared belief that policy must remain restrictive. This division means we should brace for increased short-term volatility in interest rate swaps and Treasury futures as traders digest the conflicting signals.

We recommend that derivative traders adjust their positions to account for a Federal Reserve that is in no rush to change its current stance. Implied volatility in the options market often spikes during these periods of policy uncertainty, offering premium-selling opportunities for those managing risk carefully. By focusing on the upcoming October macroeconomic reports rather than past policy debates, we can better position our portfolios for the Fed’s actual path ahead.
