Chile IMACEC August Slips Less, Easing Pressure for Rate Cuts and Supporting Peso Outlook

Chile’s Imacec economic activity index improved in August, with the annual rate rising to -1% from -1.5% in the prior reading. The move points to a smaller contraction in overall activity compared with the previous month.

Even so, the indicator remains below zero, implying output was still lower than a year earlier. The shift from -1.5% to -1% suggests momentum weakened less sharply, offering a clearer read on near-term growth conditions without signalling a return to expansion.

Implications For The Chilean Peso And Monetary Policy

The latest Chilean economic activity index (IMACEC) for August shows a contraction of -1%, which is a notable improvement from the previous month’s -1.5%. While the economy is still shrinking, this smaller decline suggests that the country’s economic downturn may finally be bottoming out. We believe this shift will force derivative traders to quickly reassess their bearish bets on the Chilean Peso (CLP).

The Central Bank of Chile has been carefully managing its monetary easing cycle, keeping its benchmark interest rate at 5.25% in recent meetings to curb stubborn inflation. A milder contraction in August reduces the pressure on policymakers to cut rates aggressively in the coming weeks. We expect this interest rate stability to support the local currency, making aggressive short positions on the peso highly risky.

Trading Strategies And The Role Of Copper

Derivative traders should focus on the USD/CLP currency pair, which has recently met heavy resistance near the 930 to 950 peso range. We suggest watching for a potential move toward key support levels near 900 pesos per dollar as domestic sentiment improves. Trading strategies that benefit from a strengthening peso, such as put options on USD/CLP, could offer good risk-reward ratios in this environment.

Additionally, copper prices, which represent over 50% of Chile’s total export profile, will play a massive role in where the currency goes next. If global copper prices remain steady alongside this improved domestic data, the peso’s recovery could accelerate. We advise traders to closely monitor copper futures to confirm that global commodity demand aligns with this local recovery.
