USD/JPY rebounds towards 154.00 as Fed and BoJ loom and Middle East tensions lift dollar demand

USD/JPY edged higher in early Asian trade on Monday, moving back towards 154.00 and recouping part of Friday’s decline, though it remains range-bound over the past week and close to the near seven-month low hit last Tuesday. Markets are positioned for key central bank decisions, with the Federal Reserve meeting on 15–16 September 2026 and the Bank of Japan on 17–18 September 2026. US inflation data released last week sustained expectations that the Fed will lift borrowing costs on Wednesday, while renewed tension involving the US and Iran has supported demand for the safe-haven US Dollar.

Geopolitical developments added to the risk premium after Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen reported drone and missile strikes on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. Separately, an Iranian cargo vessel was hit early Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz, and a planned Gulf states–Iran meeting on the waterway was postponed. Against this, the yen has found support from a more hawkish repricing of the BoJ path: markets have fully priced a 25-bps hike later this week and attach a high probability to another move in December, following comments that underlying inflation is nearing 2% and the policy rate remains below neutral. Technically, USD/JPY remains capped below the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement and the 155.30–155.20 breakpoint, with support at 152.00, then 149.17 and 145.14.

Central Bank Meetings and Tactical Positioning

As we approach the critical central bank meetings this week, we expect a major surge in USD/JPY volatility. Given that the USD/JPY pair historically accounts for roughly 13% of all global foreign exchange transactions, the stakes are incredibly high for derivative traders. We advise against holding heavy, unhedged directional positions until the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan announce their rate decisions.

With both central banks poised to adjust rates, implied volatility on short-term USD/JPY options is pricing in sharp moves. We recommend that derivative traders utilize long straddle or strangle strategies to profit from this expected price expansion, regardless of which direction the market breaks. This allows us to capture the heavy market reaction to the BoJ’s expected 25-basis-point hike and the Fed’s monetary policy path.

Options Strategies and Geopolitical Volatility

For structured premium-selling strategies, we should closely watch the key resistance zone between 155.20 and 155.30. Since the pair maintains a bearish bias below this level, selling out-of-the-money call options above 155.50 could offer a solid risk-to-reward ratio. Conversely, buying defensive put options makes sense if the spot price breaks down past the immediate 50% Fibonacci support level at 152.00.

Geopolitical risks in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, continue to inject safe-haven demand into the greenback. This tension acts as a wild card that could suddenly disrupt the Bank of Japan’s hawkish momentum and spark sudden turnarounds. We suggest keeping position sizes smaller than usual to manage sudden, headline-driven gaps in the options market over the coming weeks.
