Gold slid to about $4,320 in early Asian trade on Friday as US PPI inflation and higher oil prices pushed expectations towards a Federal Reserve rate rise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported headline PPI up 5.4% year on year in August, versus 4.8% previously (revised from 4.7%) and above the 5.3% consensus. Core PPI rose 4.6% year on year, matching forecasts, after 4.3% (revised from 4.2%); on the month, headline PPI increased 0.4% and core PPI 0.2%. Markets now price a 70% chance of a rate increase next week, up from 62% before the release, while attention turns to the US CPI report due later Friday.

Geopolitical tensions added to energy-supply worries after Iran said it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, following US strikes on five Iranian oil tankers, with the IRGC warning of escalation. Technically, XAU/USD remains below the 100-day SMA and the Bollinger midline, with RSI near 45. Resistance sits around $4,340, then $4,465 and $4,675, while support is seen near $4,252.

Gold Market Volatility And Trading Strategies

We must prepare for heightened volatility in the gold market today as the crucial US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is released. Following yesterday’s hotter-than-expected August PPI of 5.4%, a high CPI reading could seal the deal for a Federal Reserve rate hike next week. Since the CME FedWatch Tool currently shows a 70% chance of a rate hike, derivative traders should look to hedge their long exposures immediately.

Technically, gold is struggling near $4,320 and remains capped below its 100-day Simple Moving Average at $4,340. We recommend utilizing short-term put options targeting the lower Bollinger band support near $4,252 if the CPI data comes in hot. This bearish outlook is supported by a Relative Strength Index (RSI) of 45, which shows that upward momentum is rapidly fading.

Geopolitical Tensions And Market Dynamics

Rising energy costs, driven by recent military escalations near the Strait of Hormuz, are adding heavy fundamental pressure to the market. Historically, geopolitical oil shocks tend to trigger sharp spikes in the CBOE Gold Volatility Index (GVX). To capitalize on these wild swings, we suggest buying straddles to capture sudden, large movements in either direction without picking a side.

Looking ahead to next week’s Fed meeting, historical data shows that gold prices often slide ahead of rate hikes before finding a local bottom. Futures traders should maintain a bias for short positions below $4,340, with strict stop-losses placed near the Bollinger midline at $4,465. We must watch for any signs of less hawkish central bank commentary, which could trigger a fast short-squeeze back toward $4,675.
