US Treasury triples long-bond buybacks as yields climb and gold tops $4,400

The US Treasury said it will lift its long-term bond buyback operation to $6bn on Thursday, triple the $2bn pace previously outlined and above the “at least” $4bn increase flagged for September. The programme involves repurchasing older long-dated Treasuries to retire them, funded by issuing shorter-term notes and bonds, with the aim of supporting prices and lowering yields on new long-end issuance. The department frames the move as a liquidity intervention for market functioning, and it comes as the federal government pays more than $1tn a year in interest; the buyback’s scale remains small against a $32tn bond market.

Market rates still moved higher into Thursday: the 10-year Treasury yield rose above 4.9%, a level last seen in June 2007, while the 30-year yield reached 5.341%, the highest since June 2004. Mortgage rates also climbed to their highest since July 2025. In commodities, gold rose back above $4,400 an ounce on Wednesday and silver traded above $67 an ounce. The source text also cites “about $40tn” in relation to US debt and deficits.

Market Challenges to US Treasury Policy

We are seeing an unprecedented battle between the U.S. Treasury and the free market after Secretary Scott Bessent’s decision to triple bond buybacks to $6 billion. Despite this heavy-handed intervention to lower long-term borrowing costs, the market pushed the 10-year Treasury yield past 4.9% and the 30-year yield to 5.34%. For derivative traders, this blatant defiance of government policy signals that trying to cap yields artificially is failing.

We recommend that derivative traders position themselves for continued upward pressure on yields by purchasing put options on long-duration Treasury ETFs. With the federal debt rapidly closing in on the $40 trillion mark and annual net interest payments on public debt recently crossing the $1 trillion threshold, the supply of government debt is simply too massive for a $6 billion buyback to contain. Buying out-of-the-money put options or employing bear put spreads on bond prices will allow us to capitalize on the next inevitable spike in yields.

Trading Opportunities Amid Volatility and Policy Limitations

Additionally, the volatility in the bond market is ripe for exploitation through interest rate swaptions and yield curve steepener options. Since the Treasury is actively selling short-term debt to fund these long-term buybacks, we expect the yield curve to undergo dramatic, volatile shifts. Utilizing long straddles on interest rate futures will help us profit from these sharp swings as the market continues to test the Treasury’s resolve.

This perceived government desperation is a massive green light for precious metals, which have already seen gold surge past $4,400 and silver break above $67. We should aggressively build exposure using long call options on gold and silver futures to leverage this bullish momentum. As investors lose faith in the Treasury’s ability to manage its fiscal mess, capital will flow rapidly into hard assets, making short-term call spreads highly lucrative.

Historically, whenever governments attempt to defend artificial price levels against macroeconomic realities—much like the defense of currency pegs in the past—they eventually lose. This current yield spike mirrors the build-up to the 2007 financial crisis, suggesting that the underlying plumbing of the financial system is under severe stress. By trading the volatility rather than fighting the trend, we can extract significant gains as the Treasury is forced to either scale up its operations or concede to the market.
