GBP/USD Holds Near 1.35 as UK Data and BoE Outlook Steer Range-Bound Trade

GBP/USD was little changed, extending a rebound from last week’s lows as attention turns to UK trade and industrial production data due on Friday. Next week brings labour market and CPI releases ahead of the Bank of England meeting on Thursday, which is not a Monetary Policy Report (MPR) session. Markets are pricing around 19bps of tightening by the 5 November decision, which is also identified as the next likely point for a 25bp rate increase, while fiscal focus remains on a budget scheduled for late October.

On the charts, Sterling has held support in the upper 1.34s while struggling to sustain moves beyond resistance in the mid 1.35s, keeping the pair in a tight near-term range inside an ascending channel that has been in place since late June. The relative strength index sits just above 50, indicating a broadly neutral momentum profile. This week’s price action has reduced the immediate scope for a return to the local high near 1.3650.

Range-Bound Trading Opportunities and Options Strategies

We expect the British Pound to remain in a tight consolidation phase against the US Dollar in the coming weeks, presenting a strategic range-bound play for derivative traders. The pair is currently finding solid floor support in the upper-1.34s, while upside moves remain capped in the mid-1.35s within an ascending channel. We recommend utilizing short-term range-bound options strategies, such as iron condors or strangles, to capture premium while the exchange rate remains coiled.

Economic Backdrop and Key Catalysts for Sterling

Recent economic data shows the UK economy is holding steady, with Q2 GDP growth having recently printed at a stable 0.6% and inflation hovering near the Bank of England’s target. This stable backdrop supports our view that the central bank will likely deliver a hawkish hold at its upcoming meeting. Traders should watch for the imminent release of UK trade and industrial production data, which could spark short-term volatility and test the channel boundaries.

Looking ahead, we see the next major directional catalyst arriving with the jobs and CPI data next week, followed by the crucial fiscal budget in late October. Markets are already pricing in a high probability of a rate hike by November, meaning any hawkish surprises could trigger a breakout above the 1.3550 resistance level toward 1.3650. For those looking to position for the medium term, we favor buying call options on dips toward the 1.3450 support level to ride the broader ascending trend.
