USD/CHF climbs after robust US payrolls, but rally capped below 0.8100 as traders eye key levels

USD/CHF rose by over 0.30% after a strong US Nonfarm Payrolls release lifted the dollar, pushing the pair through the 50-day SMA and up to an intraday peak of 0.8126. It later eased back and was trading at 0.8098, with price action suggesting selling interest has capped the rally below 0.8100.

Technically, the bias remains upward unless the pair drops beneath the 0.7949 swing low from 20 August, a move that would open the way towards the 200-day SMA at 0.7932. The RSI has turned bullish and moved above the 50 level, but momentum points to near-term range trading. On the topside, a push above 0.8100 would shift focus to 0.8150 and then 0.8200, with the yearly high at 0.8207 beyond. A break under 0.8000 would put the 100-day SMA at 0.7995 in view, ahead of 0.7949 and the 200-day SMA at 0.7932.

Derivative Trading Strategies Around Key Psychological Levels

We see USD/CHF hovering just below 0.8100 following yesterday’s robust US jobs report, which showed payrolls beating expectations. Because the pair has stalled at this key psychological barrier, we recommend that derivative traders avoid chasing the breakout immediately. Instead, we should deploy range-bound option strategies like short straddles, as the neutral RSI suggests the pair will consolidate sideways in the near term.

Pivotal Upside and Downside Scenarios

If the exchange rate clears the 0.8100 resistance, we should quickly pivot to bullish derivative plays like call spreads. This upward momentum could target 0.8150 and the yearly high of 0.8207, supported by the Swiss National Bank keeping its policy rate low to combat a cool 1.1% inflation rate. Historical data shows that when the USD/CHF clears its 50-day moving average on strong US labor data, it frequently tests its yearly highs within three weeks.

Conversely, we must hedge against a potential pullback by monitoring the critical support level at 0.8000. If sellers push the price below the 100-day moving average at 0.7995, we suggest buying put options targeting the August 20 low of 0.7949. Falling below this mark would expose the 200-day moving average at 0.7932, making bearish ratio spreads highly profitable.
