Sterling Holds Range Against Dollar as Mixed US Data and Hawkish Fed Cap GBP/USD

Sterling traded in a tight range against the US Dollar on Tuesday, with GBP/USD stalling after a mixed batch of US economic releases. Business activity slipped in August, tempering the Dollar’s momentum and keeping price action contained through the session.

The pair was last quoted at 1.3540, down 0.06% on the day. At the same time, bets on a hawkish Federal Reserve path persisted as the US jobs market remained firm, a backdrop that aligned with Chair Warsh’s tone and helped limit any upside in GBP/USD.

Range-Bound Trading and Derivative Strategies

As the GBP/USD pair consolidates near the 1.3540 level, we believe derivative traders should prepare for a range-bound market in the immediate term. With mixed US economic indicators and a hawkish Federal Reserve keeping the market guessing, short-term implied volatility is likely to remain suppressed. We recommend utilizing iron condors or short strangle option spreads to capture premium decay while the pair decides its next major direction.

Volatility Trends and Key Support Levels

Historically, periods of mixed US data under a hawkish Fed have kept the GBP/USD one-month implied volatility depressed near the 7.8% to 8.5% range. Furthermore, with the US 2-year Treasury yield currently holding firm above 4.30%, the dollar has a strong fundamental floor that limits major GBP upside. We should watch these yield levels closely, as any further rise will likely squeeze the pound toward the key 1.3400 support level.

As we head deeper into September, traders should also look to buy cheap out-of-the-money GBP puts to hedge against a sudden hawkish surge from Fed Chair Warsh. Past data from similar tightening cycles shows that when business activity dips but employment remains tight, the dollar eventually breaks out to the upside. We advise keeping position sizes conservative and staying flexible to exploit the inevitable volatility expansion.
