Gold slips as hawkish Fed messaging and Hormuz tensions lift dollar, weigh on bullion

Gold (XAU/USD) slipped in Tuesday’s Asian session after failing to build on a rebound from sub-$4,400, described as a one-and-a-half-week low. Comments from US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole revived expectations of tighter policy, pressuring non-yielding bullion as the US Dollar (USD) regained ground. Energy prices also rose on escalating US-Iran tensions, reinforcing inflation concerns, and CME Group’s FedWatch Tool shows markets pricing about a 65% chance of a rate rise at the 15-16 September meeting. Traders are also watching US data, with the ISM Manufacturing PMI and JOLTS Job Openings due later Tuesday, before Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report.

Geopolitics remained in focus after US forces struck two rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, the first US strike since late July. Iran responded with an attack on American air bases in Jordan and said on Monday it hit the UAE’s Al Minhad Air Base using drones, while President Donald Trump warned further action was possible. Technically, the pair remains below the 100-period Simple Moving Average (SMA), with MACD below zero and RSI at 34.80. Resistance sits near $4,481 and $4,532, with $4,697 above, while support is seen at $4,430, $4,348, $4,266, then $4,149 and $3,999.

Derivative Positioning and Trading Strategy

We recommend that derivative traders position for further downside in gold (XAU/USD) over the coming weeks as hawkish monetary policy fears pressure the metal. With the CME FedWatch Tool showing a 65% probability of a rate hike at the September 15-16 meeting, buying short-term put options looks highly attractive. Historically, gold prices fell by over 20% during the aggressive 2022 Fed rate hike cycle, showing how sensitive the asset is to rising borrowing costs.

To hedge against sudden market swings, we should also look at long positions in US Dollar and crude oil derivatives. Geopolitical escalations in the Strait of Hormuz typically spike energy prices, which historically can push oil up by 5% to 10% in a matter of days. This environment strengthens the greenback, adding even more pressure on gold and making USD call options a strong defensive play.

Key Technical Levels and Risk Management

We need to watch the immediate support level at $4,430, which represents the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level. If gold breaks cleanly below this point, traders should prepare for a swift slide toward the $4,348 and $4,266 targets. However, because the Relative Strength Index is near oversold at 34.80, we should avoid chasing the market lower too quickly and instead wait for minor pullbacks to enter short positions.

We must remain cautious this week and avoid oversized positions before the upcoming US macro data releases, including the ISM Manufacturing PMI and the Nonfarm Payrolls report. Historical data shows that Friday employment reports regularly trigger gold price swings of 1.5% to 2% within minutes, which could easily trigger tight stop-losses. Derivative traders should use wide stops or structured option spreads to navigate this high-volatility window.
