Canadian dollar steadies near fair value as BoC decision and jobs data guide USD/CAD range

The Canadian dollar was broadly steady, with USD/CAD trading around Scotiabank’s estimated fundamental equilibrium level of 1.3920. That estimate was nudged higher since Friday, which Scotiabank linked to wider front-end US/Canada swap spreads, while the currency’s downside was described as limited despite volatile Federal Reserve expectations and renewed trade uncertainty. Gains, however, were framed as constrained by the wide rate gap.

Focus is set to shift to Wednesday’s Bank of Canada decision, which is expected to leave policy unchanged, and to Friday’s labour market data, where employment is expected to rise by 15k after July’s gain. On the charts, Scotiabank described technical signals as mixed, adding that the US dollar reversed back through the August bear channel after the move down from the 1.41 area. Resistance was placed at 1.3980/00, with support at 1.3845 and 1.3820/25.

Canadian Dollar Resilience and Market Environment

We see the Canadian Dollar holding steady near its fair value of 1.3920 against the US Dollar despite shifting central bank expectations. This resilience is notable given that the two-year yield spread between the US and Canada remains wide at around 75 basis points, which heavily caps any major Canadian Dollar rallies. For derivative traders, this tight trading environment suggests that a massive breakout is highly unlikely in the coming weeks.

We expect the upcoming Bank of Canada policy meeting to maintain the status quo, preserving the current interest rate differential. Additionally, the upcoming Canadian employment report is projected to show a modest gain of 15,000 jobs, which aligns with the steady but slow job growth observed earlier this year. These quiet data points mean we should anticipate very little directional momentum in the near term.

Derivative Strategy and Risk Management

Given this rangebound outlook, we advise derivative traders to focus on premium-collection strategies like iron condors or short strangles. Selling options with boundaries just outside key support at 1.3820 and resistance at 1.4000 allows traders to profit from time decay. Historical data shows that when this currency pair trades close to its fundamental equilibrium, implied volatility is often overpriced, offering a statistical edge to option sellers.

We must still manage risk closely by monitoring the 1.3980 resistance level, where any sudden market shocks could trigger temporary upward spikes. If the US Dollar corrects upward toward this ceiling, it will likely face heavy selling pressure and quickly reverse back to the mean. To safeguard our positions, we should place protective buy-stops just above the 1.4020 level.
