Turkish Lira Slips Past 48.10 as Inflation Expectations Outrun Central Bank Forecast

Türkiye’s seasonally adjusted inflation momentum is running above 2% m/m, with CBRT’s own July estimate putting headline CPI at 2.3% m/m and services inflation at 2.9% m/m. Year-end CPI expectations in the latest CBRT market participants survey have been lifted to 29.5% y/y, exceeding the CBRT’s 28% forecast, pointing to ongoing divergence between official projections and private-sector pricing assumptions.

The pattern implied by the data is one in which CBRT projections are revised higher as the year progresses rather than anchoring expectations from the outset. Against that backdrop, the Turkish lira has moved through 48.10 per US dollar and remains under pressure, with the current pace of monthly price increases still inconsistent with medium-term disinflation targets.

Currency Pressure and Inflation Expectations

We are seeing the Turkish Lira break past the critical 48.10 level against the US Dollar, driven by persistent monthly inflation running above 2%. With market expectations for year-end inflation climbing to 29.5%—well above the central bank’s 28% projection—downward pressure on the currency is accelerating. Historically, when the central bank fails to anchor these expectations, the Lira undergoes rapid devaluation phases.

Derivative Trading Strategies and Market Outlook

In the coming weeks, we advise derivative traders to leverage long USD/TRY call options to position for a push toward the 50.00 psychological threshold. To offset high option premiums, traders can utilize bull call spreads or knock-out barrier options. Shorting the currency through offshore non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) also remains a highly liquid strategy to capitalize on this credibility gap.

Furthermore, we should watch cross-currency swaps, as implied Lira yields are bound to spike as inflation expectations remain unanchored. Turkey’s policy rate, which has historically struggled to stay ahead of real inflation, will likely keep offshore borrowing costs volatile. Entering these derivative positions during brief periods of central-bank-induced Lira recovery will provide the most favorable risk-to-reward ratio.
