Sterling Trades Sideways Below 1.3600 as PCE Firms Fed Hike Bets and Warsh Looms

Sterling traded in a narrow band against the dollar during Thursday’s Asian session, holding below 1.3600 and near the low end of its weekly range. Price action remained restrained as markets waited for clearer guidance on the Federal Reserve’s rate path. US Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation for July was reported at 3.7% year on year, unchanged from the prior month but slightly above estimates, supporting expectations for at least one further Fed hike before year-end and helping the USD retain recent gains.

Countervailing drivers limited further dollar strength. The US Treasury’s buyback strategy weighed on yields, while optimism around a prospective US-Iran understanding and steps towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz tempered safe-haven demand; Iran and Oman also agreed a temporary route for commercial shipping. Conditions remained fluid after a warning that full reopening depends on US commitments under an interim June deal, keeping a geopolitical risk premium that supported crude and the greenback. Technically, GBP/USD stayed capped below the 1.3660-1.3665 supply zone, with potential dip-interest referenced around the mid-1.3400s and low-1.3300s, as attention turns to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech on Friday.

Preparations for Heightened Volatility and Breakout Strategies

As we watch the GBP/USD pair consolidate just below the key 1.3600 level, we advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility in the coming weeks. With the market closely analyzing sticky inflation data, such as the PCE price index holding at 3.7%, the immediate direction hinges on upcoming central bank signals. Historically, similar tight consolidation patterns ahead of major economic symposiums have preceded average currency breakouts of 150 to 200 pips.

To position for this, we recommend utilizing long strangle options strategies to capitalize on a sharp move in either direction. This approach allows us to profit from a breakout without needing to predict whether the Fed’s rhetoric will skew hawkish or dovish. If the Fed leans towards another rate hike this year, we expect a rapid drop toward the mid-1.3400 support level, which has historically attracted strong buying interest.

Defined-Risk Plays and Volatility-Based Positioning

On the other hand, if geopolitical tensions ease and the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens, a risk-on rally could easily push the pair past the 1.3660 resistance. For traders preferring defined-risk plays, buying out-of-the-money call options just above 1.3665 offers an attractive risk-reward ratio if a bullish breakout is triggered. We suggest keeping close tabs on daily volume indicators, as a sustained push above this barrier would confirm a broader recovery structure.

Should the U.S. dollar strengthen on renewed safe-haven demand, we should look to establish bear put spreads targeting the 1.3300 floor. This strategy limits our premium costs while protecting against a sudden hawkish shift that could drag the pound down. Maintaining flexible, volatility-based positions will be our best defense as the market processes these conflicting macroeconomic drivers.
