US equity futures edged higher in European trading on Tuesday as select technology and AI-linked shares recovered some ground ahead of Nvidia’s earnings on Wednesday. Dow Jones futures rose 0.18% to around 53,590, while S&P 500 futures added 0.28% to near 7,690 and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 0.58% to about 29,270. Attention is also on US consumer confidence data due Tuesday, followed by the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index on Wednesday, and a speech on Friday at the Jackson Hole symposium.

The move followed a mixed cash-session close on Monday, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.26% but the S&P 500 fell 0.28% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.76%, with declines concentrated in AI infrastructure shares. Sector performance also diverged, with Consumer Staples outperforming Technology by roughly 3 percentage points. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tracks 30 US stocks and is price-weighted; it is calculated by dividing the sum of constituent prices by a factor currently 0.152.

Anticipating Nvidia Earnings and Options Volatility

We should prepare for heightened volatility in the options market as Nvidia prepares to report earnings this Wednesday. Options traders are currently pricing in a massive implied move of nearly 9.5% for the chipmaker’s stock, which is slightly above its five-year historical earnings day average of 8.2%. To capitalize on this, we recommend focusing on short-term straddle or strangle strategies to capture the inevitable post-earnings price swing.

Macro Events, Sector Rotation, and Defensive Positioning

Beyond technology, we must closely monitor the upcoming Jackson Hole symposium where Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is expected to speak this Friday. Historically, the S&P 500 has experienced an average daily swing of 1.4% during the week of Jackson Hole speeches when major monetary policy shifts are teased. Given the tight trading range near the S&P 500 level of 7,690, we should look at buying protective puts to shield existing bullish positions from any sudden hawkish surprises.

We also need to watch this week’s Consumer Confidence and PCE inflation data, which will heavily influence interest rate expectations in the coming weeks. In past market cycles, unexpected PCE deviations of just 0.1% from consensus forecasts have triggered intraday swings of over 150 points in Dow Jones futures. Utilizing iron condors on the Dow, which is currently hovering around 53,590, could help us profit if the inflation data meets expectations and keeps the index within a defined range.

The recent rotation where consumer staples outperformed tech by 3 percentage points suggests that institutional money is quietly shifting to defensive positions rather than exiting the market entirely. Over the last ten years, similar sector rotations during tech-led rallies have signaled a temporary cooling period for the Nasdaq, which is currently trading near 29,270. We should consider long-term calendar spreads on tech index options, allowing us to benefit from near-term stabilization while keeping our long-term upside exposure.
