Sterling strengthened on Friday, up about 0.40%, as softer US releases weighed on the dollar and supported expectations the Federal Reserve will keep policy steady. GBP/USD traded around 1.3545 after reaching a three-month high of 1.3561, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) slipped 0.40% to 99.54. US July retail sales fell 0.6% month-on-month versus forecasts for a 0.1% rise, and the control group used in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) calculations declined 0.4% after a 0.4% increase in June.

Consumer sentiment also weakened: the University of Michigan’s preliminary August index dropped to 51 from 55.2, ending two months of improvement. One-year inflation expectations edged up to 4.3% from 4.2%, while five-year expectations held at 3.3%. Money markets put the odds of a Fed hold at 70% and a rate rise at 30%. In the UK, June GDP grew 0.3%, described as the strongest pace among G7 developed countries, with next week’s calendar set to include inflation, jobs and retail sales; US releases due include housing data, an ADP Employment Change four-week average, jobless claims and flash PMIs.

Options Strategies for Bullish Sterling Momentum

We suggest derivative traders position themselves to capture the current bullish momentum in the Pound Sterling as the GBP/USD pair tests three-month highs near 1.3561. With the US Dollar Index slipping to 99.54 and US July retail sales dropping by 0.6%, the macroeconomic backdrop strongly favors a weaker greenback. We should look to buy short-term GBP call options with a strike price of 1.3600 to capitalize on this upward trend.

For a more conservative approach, we can write put options anchored at the newly established support level of 1.3508. Historical trading patterns show that GBP/USD tends to consolidate around recently broken resistance lines, making this structural floor highly reliable for premium collection. If the pair retreats, the strong cluster of moving averages at 1.3374 provides an excellent secondary safety net for our short-put strategies.

Volatility-Driven Tactics and Risk Management

With crucial UK inflation data and US Flash PMIs scheduled for next week, we must prepare for heightened market swings. Implied volatility for the British Pound historically spikes by over 1.5% ahead of major consumer price index releases, which heavily inflates option premiums. To exploit this expected volatility, we recommend deploying long straddles ahead of these announcements to profit from sharp movements in either direction.

Recent Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) data indicates that speculative net-long sterling positions have steadily climbed, indicating strong institutional backing for the currency. However, because the daily Relative Strength Index is currently hovering near an overbought 63.9, we must remain vigilant against sudden profit-taking. Limiting risk through defined-risk bull vertical spreads rather than outright futures long positions will protect our capital from sharp, short-term corrective pullbacks.
