Dollar Index slips below 100 as easing geopolitics and softer US data weigh on Fed outlook

The US Dollar Index (DXY) was trading below 100.00 on Monday, hovering near its lowest levels since mid-June as it consolidated recent losses. The easing of the geopolitical risk premium linked to Iran’s war has reduced support for the greenback, while softer US labour conditions and fading prospects for further Federal Reserve tightening have added pressure. Market pricing still implies 11bp for September, 28bp for December and 40bp for April, keeping attention on whether incoming data prompts further repricing of the Fed path.

Technical and macro signposts are also in focus. With the employment backdrop reshaping expectations for bond and FX markets in 2H, the DXY is seen facing a key test at its 200dma of 99.18. Looking ahead, a soft US CPI reading could reinforce a move towards a more dovish policy trajectory, while a hotter print could trigger a short-lived USD bounce via front-end yields given restrictive policy settings that assume a neutral rate of 3.00%. Commerzbank pointed to roughly six basis points being priced out to December and a USD depreciation of about 0.4%, leaving room for further adjustment if inflation data undershoots.

Bearish Dollar Outlook and Trading Implications

We suggest derivative traders prepare for continued downward pressure on the US Dollar Index (DXY) as it trades below the critical 100.00 level. The fading geopolitical risk premium from eased Middle East tensions, combined with a cooling US labor market, has stripped away the greenback’s appeal. With the DXY hovering near its lowest levels in months, the momentum is clearly pointing downward.

Our bearish outlook is supported by the soft July jobs report, which saw the US unemployment rate rise to 4.3%. Derivative markets are already adjusting, with interest rate futures pricing in a high probability of aggressive rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the autumn of 2026. This shifting interest rate differential makes holding long dollar positions highly risky.

Options Strategies and Key Data Triggers

We recommend traders utilize currency options, such as buying near-the-money puts on the DXY or buying calls on the EUR/USD. If the index breaks down past its key 200-day moving average support near 99.18, we expect a rapid drop toward the 97.50 level. Using options allows us to leverage this potential decline while protecting our capital from sudden market turnarounds.

The upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) release on August 12, 2026, will be the ultimate decider for this trend. A soft inflation print will confirm the dovish shift, whereas a hot reading will likely only spark a short-lived, knee-jerk bounce in the dollar. We should view any temporary, data-driven dollar rallies as prime opportunities to establish new short positions.
