Commerzbank Cuts Gold Year-End Forecast to $4,500 as Real Yields and Fed Outlook Weigh

Commerzbank said gold has fallen nearly 30% from its January record, pressured by higher real yields and more hawkish Federal Reserve expectations. The bank cut its year-end forecast to USD 4,500 per troy ounce from USD 4,800, while keeping a longer-term path that assumes policy rates do not rise further in the near term.

Under its central scenario, the Fed leaves interest rates unchanged through year-end, with the 2% target reached in spring 2027 and a first cut from mid-2027. On that track, Commerzbank sees gold recovering to USD 5,000 per troy ounce by end-2027, down from a prior USD 5,200. It added that without a shift in rate expectations and a sustained return of ETF flows, the metal is unlikely to regain momentum or outperform on safe-haven demand.

Near-Term Trading Strategies and Risk Management

With gold prices down nearly 30% from their January peak, we advise derivative traders to focus on short-term range-bound strategies rather than aggressive bullish bets in the coming weeks. High real yields, with the US 10-year Treasury yield hovering near 4.2%, continue to make non-yielding assets like gold less attractive to the market. We recommend using neutral options strategies, such as iron condors, to capitalize on the current price consolidation around the $4,300 to $4,400 range.

For those looking to manage downside risk, we suggest buying short-term protective puts as hawkish Federal Reserve expectations remain dominant. Recent World Gold Council data shows global gold ETFs have experienced steady net outflows, proving that institutional buyers are still sitting on the sidelines. We believe gold cannot sustain a true recovery until these ETF flows reverse and interest rate expectations shift.

Long-Term Opportunities and Positioning

However, we see a strong setup for long-term positions by positioning for a turnaround as we head toward next year. We recommend buying long-dated call options or calendar spreads targeting late 2027, when we forecast gold to rise back to $5,000 per troy ounce. Historically, gold has posted average gains of over 10% in the year following the first Fed rate cut, meaning today’s cheaper premiums offer an excellent entry point for patient traders.
