Preliminary S&P Global data showed the UK Services PMI moved back above the 50.0 threshold for expansion in July, after falling in June. The index printed at 51.8, versus expectations for 49.4 and a prior reading of 48.8, pointing to a return to growth in services activity.

The Composite PMI also shifted into expansion, supported by stronger readings across both services and manufacturing. It came in at 52.1, compared with a 49.7 consensus and 49.3 previously, while the Manufacturing PMI rose to 52.8 against forecasts of 52.0 and June’s 52.5. Following the release, the Pound saw mild selling pressure, though GBP/USD was 0.1% higher at around 1.3326 at the time of reporting. S&P Global’s monthly PMI surveys track changes in activity versus the previous month, run on a 0–100 scale, and are used as leading indicators for measures such as GDP, employment and inflation.

Outlook For The British Pound And Monetary Policy

With the UK Composite PMI bouncing back to 52.1 and manufacturing leading the charge at 52.8, we believe the British Pound is poised for a stronger run in the coming weeks despite the initial dip to 1.3326. This surprise expansion suggests the UK economy is starting the third quarter on a much firmer footing than many anticipated. Derivative traders should look to position for GBP strength, particularly through long call options on GBP/USD.

We expect this robust economic activity to make the Bank of England more cautious about cutting interest rates, which should push short-term yields higher. Historically, when the Composite PMI rises above the 50.0 expansion threshold, it reduces the probability of near-term rate cuts, similar to the market shifts we saw when the UK exited its mild recession in early 2024. Traders can capitalize on this hawkish outlook by shorting short-term sterling interest rate futures or buying put options on UK Gilts.

Equity Derivatives Opportunities In Response To Domestic Strength

Additionally, the strong rebound in domestic sectors like hospitality and manufacturing suggests opportunities in UK equity derivatives. We recommend focusing on bullish strategies, such as bull call spreads, on the domestically-focused FTSE 250 index, which typically outperforms the export-heavy FTSE 100 during periods of domestic economic expansion. This allows traders to leverage the boost from increased domestic holidays and export growth without being heavily exposed to global currency fluctuations.
