Dollar-yen hits 40-year high as Red Sea oil risks stoke intervention fears

USD/JPY pushed to fresh 40-year highs on Tuesday, trading at 163.19 and briefly nearing 163.24 as the US dollar firmed against the yen. The move comes with renewed concerns over energy supply after two oil tankers carrying Saudi crude to Asia diverted in the Red Sea following threats from Yemen’s Ansar Allah, which is aligned with Iran. Against that backdrop, the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose 0.19% to 101.18, setting a five-day high. With the pair above 160.00, attention has turned to the risk of Japanese intervention, even as officials have offered no public response.

The next catalysts include Japan’s June Merchandise Trade Balance Total and Thursday’s inflation report, while US traders are watching Initial Jobless Claims on 23 July ahead of the Fed’s policy decision next week. Technically, USD/JPY is holding above a clustered Simple Moving Average (SMA) area near 160.75, with additional reference levels at 160.00, 158.52 and 154.61, and a longer-term rising trendline from around 152.10. Momentum indicators remain positive, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 66.66, and the dataset shows no immediate resistance overhead.

Strategic Trading and Geopolitical Risks

We recommend that derivative traders prepare for extreme volatility as USD/JPY surges past the 163.00 threshold. This historic high puts us on high alert for sudden Japanese Ministry of Finance interventions, reminiscent of their massive 9.8 trillion yen ($62 billion) market operations during previous currency crises. For options traders, purchasing short-dated JPY call options (USD/JPY puts) offers a strategic hedge against a sharp, state-sponsored pullback.

Geopolitical risks in the Middle East are compounding this trend as tanker diversions in the Red Sea revive energy supply fears. Since roughly 12% of global seaborne oil trade passes through this corridor, prolonged shipping disruptions are likely to keep energy prices and safe-haven dollar demand elevated. We suggest leveraging crude oil call options to benefit from this underlying geopolitical premium.

Upcoming Economic Data and Technical Outlook

We must also focus on this week’s Japanese trade and inflation data, followed closely by the Federal Reserve’s policy decision next week. With Japan’s core inflation historically struggling to stay comfortably above the 2% target, any upside surprise could prompt a hawkish shift from the Bank of Japan. To navigate this, we favor utilizing implied volatility spreads to capture premium decay before these critical announcements.

From a technical perspective, we view any potential pullbacks toward the 160.00 to 160.75 region as buying opportunities within a broader uptrend. Because the daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains below overbought territory at 66.6, the upward momentum still has room to run. We advise using knock-out barrier options to define clear risk limits while participating in this powerful bullish trend.
