Mexico Retail Sales Drop Spurs Banxico Cut Bets, Raising Peso and Consumer Equity Risks

Mexico’s retail sales fell 0.6% month on month in May, reversing the 0.8% increase recorded in the prior month. The pullback points to weaker near-term momentum in household spending after April’s gains.

On a sequential basis, the move marks a clear shift in the monthly trend for the sector. The May decline follows a period of positive growth, leaving retail activity softer at the start of the second quarter.

Implications for Monetary Policy and the Peso

We believe the surprising -0.6% drop in Mexico’s retail sales for May, down from a previous 0.8% expansion, signals a sharp cooling in domestic demand that will pressure the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). This sudden contraction increases the likelihood of more aggressive interest rate cuts in the coming weeks, which will likely erode the high-yield appeal of the Mexican peso (MXN). Derivative traders should prepare for peso weakness by buying USD/MXN call options to capitalize on a potential move back toward the 18.50 to 19.00 range.

With consumer spending stalling, we expect Mexican TIIE interest rate swaps to quickly price in deeper rate cuts for the second half of the year. Trading MXN interest rate futures on the long side represents a highly favorable risk-reward setup right now as local yields begin to slide. Historically, similar sharp contractions in retail activity, such as the slowdowns observed in early 2024, led to swift downward adjustments in Mexico’s local yield curve.

Implications for Equities and Consumer Sectors

On the equity side, we recommend buying put options on the MSCI Mexico Index ETF (EWW) or consumer-heavy local listings. A pullback in consumer activity directly threatens corporate earnings for major Mexican retailers and consumer goods giants in the upcoming third-quarter earnings cycle. Given that retail sales had previously shown resilience, this negative print will likely trigger a rapid repricing of equity risk premiums across Mexican consumer discretionary stocks.
