Margin is the initial deposit a trader places with a broker to open and maintain a leveraged position. It is sometimes referred to as collateral, since the broker holds it against the size of the position you control.
Margin is not a fee or a cost in itself. It is a portion of your account balance set aside while a trade is open, and it is returned to your available balance once the position is closed.
Margin calculation typically depends on three factors: the size of the position, the leverage offered on that instrument, and the current market price. A larger position or higher leverage generally requires a different amount of margin to open the same trade.
Brokers display required margin before you confirm a trade, and most trading platforms also show your used margin and free margin in real time so you can monitor how much of your account is committed.
Determines position size — how much margin you have available affects how large a position you can open.
Linked to leverage — higher leverage reduces the margin needed per trade, but also magnifies both potential gains and losses.
Monitored continuously — falling free margin can bring an account closer to a margin call, covered separately in this glossary.
Suppose a broker offers 1:100 leverage and a trader wants to open a position worth 10,000 units of currency. At 1:100 leverage, the required margin would be approximately 100 units, with the broker effectively allowing the trader to control a much larger position than the deposit alone would otherwise permit.
The exact figure can vary by instrument and broker, so it is worth checking the specific margin requirement shown on the platform before confirming any trade.
Margin and leverage are closely related but not identical. Leverage describes the ratio between position size and required deposit, while margin is the actual amount of money set aside to support that position. Higher leverage generally results in a lower margin requirement for the same position size.
Margin makes leveraged trading possible, but it also means losses can move quickly relative to your deposit. As a reminder, understanding your broker’s margin requirements and monitoring your account regularly is a practical habit for any trader using leveraged products.
