The United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reported an increase in gold net positions. The figures rose to $234,000, from a previous $223,900.

This data reflects changes in the futures market positions concerning gold. It provides insight into the level of market participants’ interest, relating to commodities trading activities over the period observed.

Gold Market Confidence Rises

We’re seeing a clear signal from the latest CFTC data on gold positions. Speculators have increased their net long holdings to 234,000 contracts, up from about 224,000. This shows growing confidence that gold prices are headed higher.

This move aligns with the growing market expectation for the Federal Reserve to begin an easing cycle in the first quarter of 2026. The CME FedWatch Tool now indicates a nearly 70% probability of a rate cut by March, a significant shift from just a month ago. Lower interest rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold, making it more attractive.

We should also consider the persistent inflation that marked much of 2025, with the last CPI reading for November coming in at 3.4%, slightly above consensus expectations. This stubbornness in price levels is likely influencing the Fed’s turn towards a more dovish stance to avoid a sharp economic downturn. Traders are positioning for gold to act as a reliable hedge if inflation remains elevated even as growth slows.

The Rate Cutting Cycle and Gold Prices

Looking back at the rate-cutting cycle that began in mid-2019, we saw gold rally significantly over the following year. A similar pattern could unfold as we head into 2026. For derivative traders, this suggests that buying call options with expiration dates in the second quarter of 2026 could be a way to gain upside exposure while managing risk.
